Yup.

He'll likely test the waters though regardless. And he's the type that could really shine in a combine setting.

Motor and assertiveness were always the main issues with him, but that looks to be improving in the games I've seen. Still not sure if he's just a front runner though, where those things come and go depending on how he's doing in the box score.

But if it's real, no reason why he couldn't sneak into the lottery.

I was honestly surprised to read this from you. Are you a Duck fan? I didn't think you were.

Right now he has the draft stock of a 2nd round prospect. Always thought he had a lot of potential but was going to be a project. So maybe he could sneak into the 1st round, but I have a hard time seeing him get into the lottery.
 
Ty Jerome should be much higher ranked. He's this years Landry Shamet (or a better passing Malcolm Brogdon?). He's a very good 3pt shooter, can play either guard spot because he can handle and distribute the ball and he's 6'5. He's also a very solid defender that's played in a great defensive system. Whether or not he has the lateral quickness to stay in front of elite NBA guards remains to be seen, but I think this guy is a top 20 prospect at least and he's been projected around the very late 1st to early 2nd.
 
I think Jerome is a guy who could come in and play right away and help us win, much like Brogdon did in Milwaukee and Shamet did in Philadelphia.

Not a Duck fan, just think he's interesting.

I like his mix of positional size, athleticism, fluidity, decent shooting splits / mechanics, skill with the ball, and solid IQ on both ends. That'll be enough to get a look in that range imo if he keeps up his recent level of play. Especially in a draft like this one.

And really like Jerome as a basketball player, but not sure if he's enough of an athlete for the NBA. I've wanted to compare him to Tomas Satoransky in the past, but couldn't do it because of that.

But you look at a guy like Shamet who isn't particularly athletic and he's been able to fill a roll on good teams as a rookie. I see the same type of player in Jerome except I think he can be a little better as a passer and much better defensively. Not a guy that'll be a great NBA starter, but a guy who should be able to instantly help a team and play a decent-sized roll off the bench. For a guy slotted to go in the late-first and early-second, that's really good value if you're not going to go the Simons route and swing for the fences.

Also, I know he's a little more athletic and has a little better feel for the game, but I still get Caleb Swanigan vibes from P.J. Washington.

Yeah, not a fan of PJ either.

Big thing for me is his poor defensive rebounding and he doesn't move well on the perimeter, despite slimming done considerably this year.

Just not sure what he brings at his size on either end at an NBA level that wouldn't keep a coach from playing a wing instead of him.

I guess it depends on the role you see Jerome playing.

And I know you weren't comparing them directly, but the nice thing about Shamet is that I think he's pretty fast moving around screens and the way he gets into his shot allows him to get threes up at a high volume. When I watch Ty in Virginia's mover-blocker scheme, I don't see a guy that'll be able to be used that way in the NBA. Bit of a plodder and doesn't always get into his shot as quickly as you'd like.

Also think Shamet is a better athlete laterally and in space rotating and closing out to shooters. Can get away with sticking him on some PG's and solid at chasing shooters.

Ty is a guy that I think needs to have the ball in his hands more to bring value and I just don't see enough from him athletically or as a scoring threat in that role to not be very switchable in pnr or be able to create the passing lanes necessary to make enough use of his excellent feel in the NBA.

I dont thinks Ty needs the ball to be affective. Hes in the top 5 percent or so for spot up shooting at Virginia, so simply spacing the floor he'll be effective. I also think hes a lot more fundamentally sound defensively than Shamet and rarely makes mistakes. Off -ball especially, hes much more locked in than really anyone at that level.

I think hes a 3rd guard who you ask to control the tempo and run the offense off the bench whod fit well spacing the floor next to a scoring wing or big while provided good team defense and solid on-ball defense.

An amazing Israeli player is going to be eligible for this year's draft. Yovel Zoosman, much better than Omri Casspi, a point-forward, maybe somewhat like Batum but less passive, amazing basketball IQ, long hands, not a great shooter but can score a lot of points, not a liability in any aspect. He was the 50th pick in draft express last time I checked but IMO worth late-lottery

A player from your country? You might be biased. Just saying.

I dont know much about him whatsoever. Maybe he's a good sleeper. Idk.
 
Cant get into the draft this year. Dont think we will be keeping our pick. If we need to dump it and a player so that we can keep Layman, I would be ok with that.

To me this year Simons is Bazely hr remind me a lot like Lamar Odom. Plus he has gone Simons route. Project 2nd round might be project if we buy 2nd rounder.

To me it will be crap shot after the 15 pick this year. Not real excited after the 15.

Yeah he definitely plays with a much higher IQ defensively and bigger too.

Realistically the time has passed to attach a 2019 pick to one of our contracts as a dump. No team has the necessary cap space as the draft is still under this year's cap numbers. Those teams that do have cap space or exceptions when the new league starts likely won't be interested in using that space until a few weeks after free agency starts.

By that time it is likely better to just suck it up one more year or wait to see if the expirings along with future picks could land a difference maker rather than simply saving money. Can you imagine if Denver waited on giving up picks to dump 3 expiring contracts last summer? They could possibly be the ones with Porzingis now instead of Dallas or could've added a boost for their playoff run like Tobias Harris or Mirotic. I know there are a lot more expirings next year but if we miss an opportunity to get a star because we traded our future picks to dump salary then it would doom this team to never take that next step.

The time to dump salary was earlier in the season like when Cleveland took on a bunch of future money and a 1st from Milwaukee.

Ive been very, very surprised at how low his projection is in the draft. He totally reminds me of Odom. I haven't heard much about his defense or attitude to see that there is a red flag. Otherwise, his size and abilities look like a mid 1st rounder to me. Love to see us buy a 2nd if we could get him there.

I generally agree with your opinions but I dont see any Swanigan in PJ. Much more athletic without the weight and foot speed issues. I think he looks a lot like Robert Horry. If he's available in the 2nd id love to see us buy a pick and get him. As a matter of fact, there seems to be 4 or 5 guys slotted in the 2nd round that I think could help this team with a little time to develop or get stronger. I'm talking about PJ, Bazley, Ty Jerome, Cam Johnson, Paschall. Those guys may not have high ceilings but the also have very high floors.

Well to be fair he said late lottery. Ive honestly never heard of the guy so I dont know how good he is or isnt.
We all have our bias’ though.

Hes ranked on no draft boards except one, where hes ranked 50th.

I liked him a lot as a 2nd round sleeper last year.

I haven't gotten to watch him at all this year. I was hoping for a jump in production with going back to school, but it doesn't appear from his stats that he's done that.
 
Cam Reddish is making it really hard for me to still have him high on my board.

Never bought into the upside, but more than ever do I think he needs to land in a situation with the personnel and role to accentuate his strengths and protect against his extreme weaknesses.

Not sure he'll find that if he goes as high as he's projected right now.

And I think this draft is an interesting thought exercise (like most years, but even more so this year) on team building. Many of the high usage "upside" guys don't look like true difference makers and end up being extremely damaging players if thrust into similar roles early in their careers. From there they're either given up on early or overpaid because of production that rarely equals their contributions to winning.

It's why most bad teams stay bad and why it's extremely difficult to build a team that wins at a high level in the NBA.

Just want to say I really enjoy your takes on college players. Do you scout or anything? Or is it just a hobby?
