according to spotrac, we have early bird rights now with Hood at 11.4M, so does that mean we can resign without using a MLE?

Portland has Bird or Early Bird rights on both Whiteside & Hood.

Portland could re-sign both players and still have the FULL MLE available to sign other players.

so maybe we’re just locking hood up long term? Woj tweet suggested he’s going somewhere else though, and he isn’t one to really speculate. we also know he’s tight with Olshey. Will be interesting.

How much room do the blazers have under the hard cap anyone wanna help a moron out

Can’t ever fully be optimistic with Olshey and free agency, but I’m still hopeful.

I think we need a vet. backup PG to run the second unit, maintain consistency when Dame's off the floor. I'm tired of the CJ show and it's looking like we'll have a very capable bench this year. Reggie Jackson, Jeff Teague, Goran (pipedream) Dragic, DJ Augustin, and to a lesser extent Kris Dunn would all seem to fit the bill.

Underratedly major need for us, I think.

Apparently we offering similar assets for aaron Gordon but we’re turned down.
Saw in Twitter and I do t know how to embed tweets so...sorry lol

Okay, this has me excited.

By my calculations:
* $31,626,953 Dame
* $29,354,142 CJ
* $12,138,345 Covington
* $12,000,000 Nurk
* $5,406,255 Collins
* $2,252,040 Simons
* $2,210,640 Little
* $1,882,867 Mario
* $1,663,861 Trent Jr
* $1,984,005 (Dead money - Vaejao)
* $2,844,430 (Dead money - Nichols)
$103,363,548 Total Guaranteed

Lets assume we get Milsap for the full MLE
* $9,258,000 Milsap
And I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Blazers bring back Hood. We can sign him using the Early-Bird rights up to 175% of his previous salary. I'll assume 'worst case'
* $10,006,500 Hood
I think we'll bring back Gabriel for the min -
* $1,620,564 Gabriel

With 12 players signed, that puts the Blazers at $124,248,612. The tax line is $132,627,000. That puts us under the tax line by about $8,378,388.

In this scenario, we still have the following exceptions to fill out the roster:
- Minimum salaries.
- BAE $3,623,000
- Trade Exception (Kent Bazemore trade) $7,069,662
- Bird rights to Whiteside

With $8,378,388 and the above noted exceptions, what should we do with final 3 roster spots?

Looking at the current state of the roster, I think we need to add some depth at center and a true backup point guard. I wouldn't be against bringing back Whiteside on a reasonable contract. Or use the TPE and work with another team to pick up a center (Kanter?). Then follow that up with signing a vet point guard using the BAE.

I love this Blazer activity. I'm all in!

Given that, and with what @42N8Bounce posted above, could the Blazers acquire a player for nothing and also pick up a Draft pick for taking on a salary without sending any back?

Remember that the hard cap after using the full MLE is actually the apron, which is about $6M above the tax line. So really about $14M in room.

I believe so. But technically the Blazers would need to include something in the trade, so perhaps a future 2nd rnd pick that has protections.

Technically - no. You have to send something back.
Realistically, you can send a heavily protected 2nd (top 55) - which in most cases will not convey.

Dan marang was just on the radio and said in the last 10 days he’s been hearing Jae crowder with MLE
Also mentioned cousins as a BAE target...

I like both if those options, but if Cousins proves he’s healthy, can he really be had for only the BAE? But would love to take the risk if all it costs is the BAE.

Jeff Green would also be a good BAE candidate.

If we are not to bring back Hassan who do we get as a legit 5 backup?. Going to need someone else besides Zack.
