The Blazers had to get a second round pick for the 14th spot because that keeps them under the luxury tax vs a veteran.

Neil probably thinks with a year of practice and if he works hard maybe Elleby can do something next season. There is a track record with Gary Trent, Allen Crabbe, Will Barton, etc doing nothing as a rookie then some minutes their second year. I doubt Neil thought Elleby would play a minute this season.

Exactly--I think NO drafted Elleby as a potential replacement for GTJ if he gets like a max offer next year and it's just too much for us to match.

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but how many guys are on that list due to injury issues? Was Brandon Roy over-paid?

Several, but you could make lots of spin-off arguments like, how many players not on the list have higher value? The point was simple, CJ represents better value than roughly half of the players paid higher than him.

I would take all those guys on a team (operative word being a as I’m not talking about just Portland) over CJ outside of love,Wiggins, and possibly Griffin. And two of those are only because of injuries.

You're changing it slightly to just preferred players, rather than weighing contract and impact. There's a big difference between CJ's $29M and Russ' $41M, for example.

Giles actually had some decent numbers last season, and was a lot better as a starter. I don't know if that really means anything

his wingspan is 4" longer than Zach, so at least the Blazers have a couple of PF's with height & length, even though one is still injured

Honestly he has been kind of THICC the lady couple of seasons. And not in a bad way. He's kind thick. Not quite Harden thick, and not quite as svelte as Dame. Kind of in-between.

Trent will sharing minutes with Hood at the 2 when everyone is healthy. So I see Stotts staggering minutes with Hood and Trent. When CJ comes out I see Trent comes in to finish the quarter. Hood will come in with the 2nd unit. The 2nd unit will be CJ Hood Melo Zach and Kanter that's when everyone is healthy. Now can Giles beat out Kanter maybe but he we will see. They might do him the same as Trent and Hood. Giles will come in and spell Nurk and Kanter comes in with the 2nd unit.

I'm a bit bummed that Zach doesn't get to compete in these practices versus Giles. Man I think the competition this season is really going to elevate these players' games or weed out the ones that just don't have it.

Zach is the better rim protector and shooter, while Giles is the better rebounder, passer, and interior scorer. Two 7 footers (yeah I know Giles isn’t technically 7 feet shut up) with their mobility would be fun to watch, especially on the defensive end.
