It's great for Portland obviously. And if the thinking is the Spurs will find very little attractive in the Aldridge market, it might be good enough for them (assuming there were no burnt bridges when Green left the Spurs). But I'd be pretty certain Philly would need more to give up Simmons. How much more I don't know, but it would have to come from Portland

But I'd be pretty certain Philly would need more to give up Simmons. How much more I don't know, but it would have to come from Portland

I would throw in future seconds, and Simons. But i would want to retain Trent/Little. Prolly not enough for Philly esp with tax implications

yeah...I mean, if it's true Philly wasn't willing to give up Simmons for Harden, CJ certainly won't be enough, and 2nd round picks wouldn't bridge the gap

maybe what Portland needs to trade for is somebody that can correct this dynamic:





those are the Portland numbers for spot-up possessions, and the last column is percentile ranking. Not very surprising that Dame is best at that on the team. In the overall NBA rankings, Dame is 4th, CJ 5th, Simons 6th, and Little is 11th (Harden leads and PG13 is 7th)

but to me, the most revealing column is the 3rd one that gauges frequency. Dame only gets spot-up opportunities on 5.2% of his possessions. Portland runs almost no off-the-ball and weakside action for Dame. Somebody who is elite at spot-up should be getting around 20% frequency. Less dribbling, more passing. But then, it's probably the case that the way Dame flexes defenses and his passing ability is why 3 other Blazer teammates are in the top-11 in the league in spot-up. This seems to be another argument for adding a player with the vision and handles of a PG. Another case of Dame needing more help

I'd have to dig for it, but I heard that Philly was willing to offer Simmons and the Rockets' owner killed the deal because he hates Morey.

ya and multiple people have reported Ben had his bags packed for Houston, but they kept asking for Maxey and Thybulle in the deal last minute. Then BK swooped in with their grandfather offer that included a bunch of picks which the cheap owner down in HOU wanted more.

that's not a personnel issue. it's a system issue.

Yup. I think if CJ can come back and still look as good as he did, he might be enough to pull that deal.

ya, i would. mostly cuz i love the idea of ben simmons and dame playing together. i don't think there's a more synergistic potential running mate with dame. Spurs would want way more than that for Derozan, I'd imagine.

Yeah.... I don't have a good feel for DeRozan's value though. He's a UFA after this season.

I know this is flawed but when looking at trades right now I think about the fact that we had a better winning percentage without CJ and Nurk so I just don't think about losing them in the trade. So this trade to me looks like trading DJ for Ben Simmons and LaMarcus. If this team: Dame, Gary, DJ, RoCo, Enes, Melo, Hoodie, Simons and Little was winning at .608, what would it do when you replace DJ with Simmons and LA? That's got to be a team that wins 70% of it's games and legitimately contends.

You give Simmons the ball and everyone around him can hit the three. You give Dame the ball and run him and Simmons like we have been him and Nurk for the last few years on the pick and roll and that would be so lethal. When Dame goes to the bench Simmons is in and Ant gets to play off the ball. Wow that would be like a dream come true.

So sad that if the Sixers and Spurs came to us with this deal that it would likely be Neil that wouldn't pull the trigger.

Like I said, it's flawed in a lot of ways. You can't disregard the value of two guys that are just a tier below all star level either. It's just how I've started to think about thing.

I just start thinking like what if we added ??? to this group... we know what this group looks like against a lot of bad teams and some good teams. So what would they do when you add player x or players x and y?

I'd say it's probably both. Portland would need a passer at least close to Dame's level to capitalize on any off-ball action the Blazers would run for Dame. CJ-Turner-Napier just haven't been enough. And because it wasn't enough, Portland hasn't tried to implement much offense for Dame that is created by teammates

which of course adds weight to the idea of trading for Simmons

My favorite trade is still trading Hood and Trent and Giles for Larry Nance. Nance is a good passer, rebounder and I think he leads the league in deflections, very high in steals, decent 3 pt%. He is signed up for two more years after this one. Cleveland needs a big guy as their third guard. I think most people agree we need to trade Trent or CJ, can't afford both.

that's true, but it also means the value of the first is less than normal, even if they are willing to trade it unprotected. On the other hand, it's pretty certain Portland's obligation to Houston will be finished in the next draft. So, a 2023 first is not that far out

I don't have a strong idea of what his value would be around the league. Any team trading for him would want some assurance that he'd be willing t0 re-sign (or at least not cause issues with not wanting the team to match), he's limited on D, and needs to be next to a playmaker. I think some team will be willing to pay him $15M, but I'm not sure they're going to be happy with the decision long-term.

Yeah but Trent is a player at a premium position. I personally would want more than a journeyman and a bust if we are going to trade him.

Agreed. A player we could target is John Collins. Maybe the Hawks don’t want him because of how loaded they are on guards, but perhaps Trent to Piston, Grant to Hawks, and Collins to Portland. Obviously need other players to make the trade work
