Well, you are mostly descended from criminals, so I guess it's a good thing you turn your energies to sport. Meanwhile the Yanks are descended from Puritans, so with them it's to take their mind off masturbation.

I have no idea why GB is doing so well these days (certainly compared with, say, Germany). I grew up in the days when all we watched was the 1500 meters (Sebastian Coe! Steve Cram!) and fucking figure skating (Torville and Dean!). I think we really invested in sport for the 2012 London Olympics and it just carried over somehow.

Anyway, how you like your dust, @PtldPlatypus ?

I predict that track and field is going to be a bad thing for China's lead in Golds...

Meanwhile Australia leaps up to second in Golds. How can a nation surrounded with shark-infested-water be so good at swimming?
I think you just answered your own question. Gotta outswim the sharks.
And crocodiles.

Most Aussie children start swimming lessons from between 6 months to 2 years of age. All Aussie children complete compulsory swimming lessons throughout Primary (Elementary) School. All major swimming events are televised on free to air TV during prime time, and are lauded by the media, politicians, and the general public. Excellence in swimming is just in our culture.

Hey! I resemble that remark!

Definitely a residual effect of 2012. Seb Coe is well known here, maybe because he coached some Aussie athletes after he retired.

Julien Alfred wins Gold for St. Lucia's first EVER medal! Fantastic!

Britain's Neita just out of the medals, but still much better than expected. Feel bad for Jamaica, who have failed to medal for the first time in forever. Maybe they can annex St. Lucia.

Which event(s) are you talking about?

I wonder how Julian Alvarez feels about this.

I’m not at all an expert on running, but it seems like every time I see someone get out to a big lead, they just run out of steam and get smashed at the end.
