Lindsey Vonn will compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics despite ‘completely ruptured’ ACL injury

I had a completely torn ACL and was able to do quite a bit before I ultimately got surgery - much more than you would expect. It's very personal though - some people hardly use them. Other can hardly walk. As an avid skier I can see how an expert like her might be able to still do it fine. Its minutes shes skiing - not hours like in football or basketball. She is certainly going to have a higher risk of further injury and if there is an injury very possible she has meniscus damage.

Hope for the best for her.

I mean I guess the question is she just aiming to finish decent or is she actually going to make an effort to win gold?

People have finished large portions of the race on one ski. It will be something if Vonn actually pushes herself enough to try and win.

She's had knee replacement surgery (both knees). I wonder if that helps or hurts this?

Good question - I didnt realize that. I could see the structure of the replacement not relying on the ACL as much? If an ACL is MORE critical I can't imagine she is going forward with this.

I have met a lot of skiers with knee replacements on ski lift that was very cool to hear they could now ski so well on them. I didn't realize any Olympic athletes were on them. Very impressive.

Lindsey Vonn will try to race the Olympics on a torn ACL. She wouldn’t be the first

"
But Vonn is 41. This is it for her. Joana Hählen of Switzerland has done it without surgery. American Bode Miller was always cagey about the state of his knee ligaments. Carlo Janka of Switzerland tore his ACL in 2017 and competed in the Olympics just over two months later without surgery.

Even Vonn’s youth coach from Buck Hill in Minnesota has done it.

“I competed for three years with no ACL. Can be done,” said Tony Olin in a text message. “It’s like mechanicals on a car, a broken suspension part … gotta fix it and keep driving.”

Added Johnson: “It’s very easy for doctors to say no, this is impossible. When I tore it before the Olympics, I skied down and I didn’t think I had torn it. It’s hard. It’s not easy. It’s not the safest thing that you can conceive of doing, but it can be done, and it is done.”

From the sounds of Vonn’s determination, it’s going to be done again.

“I’ve been in this position before,” she said Tuesday. “I know how to handle it. I’ve been on the world stage before. I know how to handle that.”

Working in her favor is Vonn’s lower body. She might have one of the strongest physiques in sports, and that starts with her base. Vonn’s legs are packed with muscle.

It’s how she keeps that incredible aerodynamic tuck for so long, allowing her to glide so beautifully down the mountain. If anyone’s legs can make up for a completely ruptured ACL, it’s Vonn.
"

"
has seen countless patients right after they have torn their ACLs — said Vonn’s attempt might not be as wild as it sounds.

“Everyone associates a torn ACL with ‘you’re done,’ ” Metzl said. “In sports, like soccer or football, where there is a lot of planting of the feet, they often end up having to have ACL surgery. In skiing, it’s not outside the realm to put a brace on the knee and see how it performs.”

Generally, first-time ACL tears cause significant bleeding and pain. However, if Vonn isn’t experiencing enough of that to make competing impossible, then she may be one more ski racer doing something that sounds ridiculous to everyone else.

Then again, isn’t that what skiing 80 mph down an icy slope is anyway?
"

I play volleyball and basketball and I had a complete ACL tear a couple years ago and I did not have the surgery. I tore it playing indoor volleyball. After healing up and wearing a brace, I returned to very high level volleyball and can do everything I did previously and the brace prevents me from buckling that knee from landing. Makes me wonder why basketball players don't wear braces all the time preventatively. It doesn't hamper my movement and makes me feel stronger. I have contemplated wearing one on my other knee (the right knee) just as a preventative measure.

'Crotch-enlarging' scandal ahead of 2026 Winter Olympics sparks major rule change

Officials at the 2026 Winter Olympics are putting an intense focus on the crotches of every ski jumper competing in Italy this month.

A major rule change is going into effect just in time for the games, starting on Friday, which will put tamper-proof microchips in the suits of each athlete and use 3D scanning technology to measure the space between their legs.

The drastic and awkward measures were installed after a crotch-enlarging scandal rocked the ski jumping world last year and led to multiple suspensions among the Norwegian team, a favorite to dominate in medals at every Winter Olympics.

The scandal erupted during the 2025 Ski Jumping World Championships in Norway, where the home team was caught secretly adding extra fabric to the crotch area of suits worn by two top male athletes, Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang.

Ski jumping is a sport where athletes speed down a steep ramp on skis, launch into the air, and try to fly as far as possible before landing.

Since the distance skiers travel is crucial to their score, a big part of success comes down to aerodynamics, how air moves around an object (or person) during flight.

Crotch-enlarging created more surface area in the skin-tight suits that catch the air just right. More fabric around a skiers groins means they can glide longer and farther without falling too quickly, potentially adding several more feet to each jump.

Rules only allow suits to be a tiny bit bigger than the jumper's body, about two to four centimeters around, so the enlargements by the Norwegian team were ruled illegal, leading to five suspensions among the coaches, suit technicians, and athletes.

I thought this was going to be an issue of gender espionage or trans athletes not declaring their package or something. Wow, lots drama and stories for the Olympics.

Enlarging the crotch of the clothes is clearly illegal.

But I don't see anything about a ban on an addadicktome surgery?

When do they "measure" the 4cm gap? Guess a team could push to have the measurment done when the guy is "excited"? Lol

Pablo did a whole deep dive into crotch enlargement.

So for these events, do they strive for crotch shrinking or minimizing? To streamline the crotch for aerodynamics to decrease wind-resistance? But they can't investigate or go after someone for having a tiny crotch, right? Most they could do is marry them. That's what I did.
