I don’t follow hockey enough to comment on its schedule. As far as the NBA goes, teams could probably work around losing a star or two each for the US team, but basically all of the foreign NBA players would also be gone to their national teams. The Blazers would probably lose a slew of players for a month or more.

No Basketball to the Winter Olympics. You would have to extend the season to go through July, leaving two months between the end of the finals to the start of the season. I think for the league it works much better for the Olympics to land in the NBA offseason.
You see the NHL doing it, but the games are different. NBA you have your S5 and bench players which play heavy minutes (% of game time played). In the NHL you have deep teams and certain players which get heavy minutes while most split fewer time on ice between each other.
In soccer you see it with World Cup Qualifiers or Champions League/Europa, but it’s like an extension of the regular season for a week or two where you are playing just like you would - only in another country.
What do you actually do if the Olympics were during the season? Do you reduce the # of games played in an NBA season? I’m against doing so because of how it would change the record book, which I know has happened before… I’m just not a fan of it happening again.
