Ok, I love Trump. What he's doing to wreck the economy, destroy the planet, destroy our standing abroad, and enrich himself at our expense is the best thing ever!

And the Republican party backs him all the way, which is definitely an awesome thing about the Republican Party.

I don't understand why they don't teach this in schools. Maybe they could hand out Trump-branded condoms? The only problem I foresee is that the size might be too small.

That a Barf!

I don't like Trump either and many in both parties. There are some in both parties I don't mind.
IMO, the Dems and Republicans are both getting way to ideological and further away from what the founders wanted for this country.
Im all for a few other parties or just contestants for all offices.
The other thing that could be done is split off into 3 separate countries; The United Democratic States of America, The United Republican States of America or The United Unified States of America. Basically what we have now in a sense. Id move to the Unified States of America.

Where, geographically, is that?

barfo

Wisconsin

You think Wisconsin is unified? They are just evenly split between two warring factions. It's the opposite of unified.

The Left and NE Coast's would be UDSA
The Midwest would be UUSA
The Southern Coast and South would be URSA

and they could clean up after themselves!

Honestly, that would be awesome for those of us in the UDSA. We'd have most of the economic power and would not have to subsidize the red states anymore.

They are more willing to consider and compromise than the coast is. They are more capacity to work together than many States. They have both Dem and Republican governors through the last 50 year.
Many of the die hard Union members are also God fearing Patriotic citizens.

Maybe so. However, you may spend more than you bring in and your UDSA representatives would spend 1200. a night on hotels and 3 grand in three days on food and airfare.

want to bet..The red states would have a campaign where they paid travel for all the homeless to live in Portland.

Yeah, that's why the republican legislature stripped powers from the governor when a democratic governor got elected. Because the parties work together so well.

If people don't get away from the dogma they've been entrenched with, and continue to be not receptive to other points of view's, there is no promise for change or compromise.
Change your position on whatever and you can change your perspective on things. Otherwise its just the same old crap and rut.

Change the president and my perspective will change

Even if it was a republican president again?
I have no problem with either party, but the republicans need to do some serious purging. Ryan was one and he is gone, but McConnell , Jordan, Collins, Nunez is a good start.

California already tried that. We just shipped them back by Greyhound.

Even if it was a republican president again?
Depends on the Republican. If it were Kasich, yes, my attitude would change nearly 180
lol...I was just joking with Barfman.
Seriously, California tried that. I think some other states may have experimented with that, also.

Many states have indeed experimented with joking with me. But, it was like, only once in college, and they were drunk. It doesn't mean they will be joking with me ever again.

Generally speaking, our life views are formed through our upbringing, education, experiences, and the like. When I say things like, "people just need to suck it up, get a job, work hard", and the like, I suppose I'm speaking through my own life lens. Stupidly, I was a 10th grade high school dropout and had to reinvent myself (career-wise) 4 or 5 times through the course of my life. I never expected any handouts, or otherwise....I just figured things out for myself. Shoot, when I met my wife online from across the country, I was so smitten, I quit my job in Oregon, sold my belongings, bought a truck, moved to Tennessee, went to real estate school, got my license, THEN proceeded to ask her marry me. Fortunately, she said yes! That said, I've learned much in the profession, worked hard, and do well for myself....and her.

Look, I understand you don't just toss out SS and Medicare. TOO many folks depend on it. That said, I think these things can be reformatted some as to privatize or semi-privatize them. Look at 401k's. Great idea! Also a great thing when employers match funds to whatever degree. I was in the corporate world for 20+ years and loved contributing to my 401k. In fact, I used to split my raises with it. As an example, if I received a 4% raise that year, I would take the 2% raise, then begin contributing 2% more to my 401k. Over time, the compounding factor was amazing.

Anyway, all this to say.....while I certainly don't agree with all Trump has said, or is doing, he's still my President and will support him for that reason. I didn't vote for Obama, but when he became President, I still supported him because, well, he was my President. I will again vote for Trump in 2020, unless another Republican, that shares my viewpoints, emerges as a "legitimate" option to become President. I've already related to @barfo that I'll be keeping a very close eye on John Kasich. He was my guy in 2016 before having to drop out of the race.

To Gabbard's credit, she said today that she ruled out the possibility of a 3rd party bid if she doesn't get the Dem nomination.

Here's where we differ, I agree with everything Pete Buttigieg says and does. I agree with almost everything Kamala Harris and Cory Booker say and do.

The fastest growing group of registered voters are the independents or unaffiliated.

This does not mean the independents have the numbers to form a third party and win a presidential election. But, they control the votes that will affect the outcome.

As of today, my opinion as an independent is. Neither party is marketing their platform in a way that convinces me to vote for any of their candidates.

This presidential election looks like a repeat of the last one. All of our options then as now are not good ones. Yikes!

Well, if your opinion is that every one of the 20 Democratic candidates is Hillary Clinton, I guess so?

I kind of like Yang, but so far most of the candidates haven't struck me as people I'm a huge fan of, the, "I'm not Trump", argument will probably win an election though heh.

Howard Schultz says today that he's definitely not running. Good riddance.

this election of 2020 is so divisive, so visceral for so many that i can't help but believe the that either party isn't rubbing there hands together in glee. republicans' bemoaning the state of their chances, democrats fueling funding with every word out of the president's lips, they both will be fundraising enormous volumes of cash regardless of the winner...... it is crazy that this has become such a binary, diametrical choice. there is true hate being spewed by both sides and being considered acceptable because, you know, the other guys are doing it. personally i find neither party truly representative of my own value systems on many issues of consequence, but am forced to choose the lesser of two perceived evils. that the divisiveness needs to end and respect for considered opinions of others seems tantamount IMHO.

i disagree with so many of the policy positions of both parties', yet in order to impact the national election one would be forced rank the party policies', then to"hold one's nose" making the choice, hoping that the policy disagreements won't have as much of an impact as feared. in a pew research poll of september 20-22nd 2020, fully 42% of registered voters are either independent or non affiliated. why is our choice of potential candidates held hostage by by the 2 parties, neither of which has a share greater than 28% in the coming election? better question is how does this change? why is a purity test on policy allowed to so greatly influence monies for potential candidates and is this likely to change going forward? the fate of our democratic process moving forward seems to hang in the balance. without complete control by one party or the other, solutions to issues of great consequence grind to a halt but the corollary to that being that controlling party polling representing these and other issues dilutes down those issues acceptance by the total electorate. this system has lead to the need of the two parties to incorporate the views of the extreme right and the extreme left in order to control the government, imho.

it is my hope that some of the realizations concerning the present systems failures to be truly representative of the electorate, to disproportionately represent the interest of corporate monies, to cause conflict and to outsize the need to cater to extremism may be discussed and addressed during the next election cycle. hopefully we can move beyond the discussion to taking concrete reforms in the near future. i favor not only third party but fourth, fifth etc., etc. here is from a 3rd party platform that i personally agree with and that they may reflect opportunities to better represent us in the future.

  • The House of Representatives and the lower houses of state legislatures should be elected by a system of proportional representation.
  • All elections should be held using either a ranked choice system or approval voting.
  • Voter registration should be easy, and laws attempting to restrict voter registration deserve opposition.
  • Access to impartial information on candidates and ballot initiatives should be easily available in public print and broadcast media.
  • Independent and minor-party candidates for public office shall have fair and equal access to ballots. This right shall not be infringed by burdens such as exorbitant voter signatures and filing fees.
