I'm in Narita airport right now...literally standing in line to board when the first one hit, and then after the second aftershock they moved us outside. No one was hurt at the airport, which impresses me. (But it didn't stop prayer for the millions of others affected by this) B/c it was a few thousand people sitting on the tarmac in 45deg weather when it started to rain, they gave in to "peer pressure" by a few of us military types and let us into the first floor commuter terminal. Then they talked about the potential for a 30' tsunami coming, but the airport administrators wouldn't let anyone move to a higher floor until it had been inspected. That finally happened 10 minutes ago.
Then we heard that all the flights were cancelled, even though the runway was inspected as clear, and we had pilots and planes sitting at the terminal waiting for us. They passed out the emergency blankets, ritz crackers and one bottle of water (and some formula for the babies) and told us they didn't know any more, but that we would "probably" be re-booked "sometime after tomorrow". Since immigration had left the building, it was like being Tom Hanks in The Terminal, where you couldn't get on your plane and you couldn't leave their holding area (which is packed). Well done to Delta, who at that point opened up the planes on the runway, took all the snacks and started passing them out to people.
We'll see how long this goes. Terminal's now safe, runway's been inspected and the poor bastards that were on the tarmac for 7 hours took off successfully. Our planes are still here, and pilots are here. Though there's devastation all over, I'm selfishly hoping to get out of here quickly. My baby girl's 1st birthday party is tomorrow.
Hope that all of you in the tsunami zone make it out of this ok. From early reports of the Philippines and Indonesia, it seems that not much damage is coming from the delayed tsunamis.

thanks for the thoughts, guys....I'm near the windows but I've pulled myself into a little cubby underneath some seating. I should be warm and semi-safe from falling glass and debris, but close enough to outside that if stuff starts collapsing I can make a 15' jump to the tarmac.
Stay safe Brian. We just got married in Saettle and two of our guests flew in from Japan...and back yesterday morning. My wife's mom hasn't been able to get a hold of them or any of their other relatives over there (spread out from Shikoku to Osaka, Tokyo and Hokaido). Do you know if only Honshu got hit hard or the other islands too?

Earthquakes are small potatoes, compared to the irresponsible insanity of building nuclear power plants.

How many total deaths are there from Nuclear power plants?
Did you see that tsunami? Holy shit!
What the hell are you looking at? Turn on the TV, there is a tsunami! Huge tsunami!
I was watching MSNBC. Isn't a tsunami a wave that travels thousands of miles, like from Japan to Hawaii? I think the word is being misused here.
It's almost ironic that MSNBC is being conservative with their earthquake rating. There is a wave traveling thousands of miles. Seriously, maybe you need to change the channel.
Where are our military bases on Japan and were any of them hit by the tsunami? I haven't heard anything yet.
A tsunami is simply a large wave caused by a large displacement of water. Distance travelled is irrelevant.
@TheBrokeKid Early reports say 10,000 already confirmed dead in #Japan![]()
Wow, tsunami warning issued for hawaii
Tsunami watch (not warning) has been issued for Multnomah and Clackamas counties.
tsunami expected to hit hawaii at 3am hawaiian time.
i'm thinking more quakes around the world are coming. its like dominos. New Zealand, Chile and Japan.
saw on the tweeters that Canon Beach had tsunami sirens blasting.
ah fuck. Tsunami *watch* issued for West Coast, CA to AK. Wave expected to reach SF at 8:16 a.m. Santa Barbara 8:24 a.m. La Jolla 8:48 a.m.
holy crap they have to evacuate waikiki. that's nuts. so many people there.
The Oregon coast is officially in the tsunami warning.
I'd hightail it, but I gotta pick up my brother at LAX in the AM. bleh. wonder if this will affect flights....LAX is right next to the Pacific Ocean.
Oregon advises coastal residents to evacuate
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Oregon Emergency Management on Friday advised coastal residents to evacuate before 7 a.m. local time due to the risk of a tsunami. The massive 8.9 magnitude quake in Japan triggered tsunami warnings for most of the Pacific basin, including northern California and Oregon. A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office said no residents were being forced to leave. She said schools would be closed along the coast and the National Guard was on standby.

2012.....
starting to take it more seriously???
a tsunami did hit hawaii and the west coast. Waves were affected here as were rip currents, it did not go inland though.

It says the waves were 7-foot waves. Those happen every day there. Surfers don't get up off their towels for that. I guess you could call it a tsunami, even when it arrives unnoticeably as a regular-sized wave. I'm talking about tsunamis that hurt anyone.
There are about 10,000 times as many tsunami alerts as there are tsunamis that hurt anyone.
When I hear the word tsunami, I think, "Yeah, right." The only real tsunami, travelling thousands of miles, that killed anyone that I've noticed in my lifetime is the one of a couple of years ago, which started in Indonesia, yet killed people in India. That is extremely rare. You might find one or two more that didn't get as much publicity so I forgot them, but the point is, when you hear the word tsunami, be skeptical that it's not just a short-range tidal wave, while respecting the trouble that it's causing, of course.
Think of the force it takes for a wave to go from Japan to Oregon. Oregon authorities issue warnings so they won't be criticized later by panic artists for sleeping through it, which they probably did after issuing the warnings.
