A couple of good reads on draft PG for this year

interesting.. how they talk about Rubio reminds me of how they talk about Sergio.. Suspect Jumper, but known for his creativity with the ball.

Brandon Jennings doesn't really interest me, everything I've read about him shouts "Bassy 2.0" to me

Of all the rest of the point guards in this year's draft I've been most interested in Eric Maynor, he's a pass first guy, he's efficient, a big game player, and can score in a variety of ways. The other I kind of like but have reservations about is Lawson who seems to have really honed his shooting skills this year, he's quick as hell and gets into the lane almost at will, while still demonstrating a willingness to pass and set teammates up, but the 4 or 5 times I watched him play it still looks like he has trouble running a half-court oriented offense and I worry about his short stature, all that said, something tells me he's going to be a pretty good player.

I havent seen him play much I'll be honest.. but he kinda sounds like a Jameer Nelson type player.. would that be an accurate assumption?

I would really like to see him in a "non highlight" situation to make that judgement.

sorry and the player I was referring to on this post was Lawson.. not someone like Jennings or so.

Yea, I think his defense is better though. #2 pick though? I am not sold on that.

Lawson is a little bit (though he's probably a better distributor than Nelson was coming out of college).

I've heard Raymond Felton comparisons too, but I don't see it, mainly because Felton is a terrible shooter.

Ah I see. Thanks for the clarification.

When I saw Maynor in the tournament, he impressed me. If I had to compare him to any past player, he reminds me a lot of Kenny Anderson.

I will be so happy if Portland does not take yet another PG in the 1st round

2008-Bayless
2007-No PG draft, but we signed Blake
2006-Sergio
2005-Jack (PASSING ON TWO GOOD PG'S)
2004 Telfair

But I know KP, we are happy with our PG situation.

My recollection of Kenny on the court is a little hazy; they do seem to have a similar build and way of playing the game (mix of scoring and distributing) but I'll be honest, I've only watched Maynor play maybe 3 times (all in the tournament the past two years) and it's been a ten years since Kenny was in a Blazers uniform.

I will say one thing about Maynor, he just seems to have "it" -- whatever "it" is -- kind of in the same way that Brandon made me react when I watched him playing for Washington his senior year.

Same here, unless of course the starting position gets addressed through a FA signing or a trade and the draft pick is added to the roster for depth.

Yea I know what you mean. I only saw him in the tournament too. But you have to hope some of that tournament bravado translates to big game and or playoff love. When you add in the fact that as long as Roy is here, a pure PG would probably be a bad idea, he fits the bill pretty well. You have to get some scoring from the PG position.

maybe i'm just being dumb and have overlooked it, but on the draftexpress situational stats article, do they have a link to a spreadsheet or anything where you can actually sort through and look at the numbers they are talking about?

not having really seen rubio play much(other than the olympics), i think eric maynor is the best pg in the draft. if the blazers want to give up on bayless, they should draft maynor.

No one else is even remotely interested in Johnny Flynn? I think this kid is going to be a beast! Reminds me of Chris Paul.

A shade under 6'0, tough, strong, athletic, smart, great floor general, great leader... Given what we'd likely have to give up for Rubio or Jennings compared to the step down in amount we'd have to give up to get Flynn I think he's the way to go.

does your most recent email say "Dear Johnny Flynn.. Welcome to SportsTwo Forums" :P

I am. Flynn and Maynor are the two PGs I like most in this draft.

I'll add that I think Tyreke Evans could be a perfect fit next to BRoy as well. His potential probably vaults him into the top5 range, but if he struggles to find a niche as a 1 or a 2 during workouts he could be had at a decent price... Probably my 2nd or 3rd (w/ maynor being the other) along w/ Flynn in this draft of guys I'm watching.

And lets also not forget... My boy from last year... Lester Hudson!

Frankly, I didn't watch Flynn play enough to say anything about him one way or another (once in the tournament and the other in that marathon overtime game with UConn.) From what I remember he's definitely got the jets, but his play style seemed almost more 'playground' than 'pro' to me (he looked really out of control on a lot of his drives, and seemed to go for the really high level of difficulty play versus the 'right' play) :dunno:

Chad Ford had an interesting report on Darren Collison, I figured I'd post the transcript here since we're on the topic of point guards (you need Insider to read the full article).

Darren Collison, PG, UCLA
Collison has also been an enigma. As a sophomore, a number of teams saw him as a potential lottery pick, but his numbers haven't really improved during his junior and senior years.

On the plus side, he's probably the fastest player in the draft. Even in a situation like the Sand Dunes at Manhattan Beach, Collison can fly up and down the floor. I also think Collison is a good shooter -- he shot 52 percent from 3 as a junior and nearly 40 percent from 3 as a senior.

In the workout with former Hornets assistant coach Dave Miller, Collison was unconscious shooting from everywhere on the floor. Whether he was driving to the basket, shooting the midrange jumper or launching NBA 3s, his shot was perfect. Combine the speed and shooting ability and you have a really interesting player.

On the downside, Collison is pretty small and lacks great strength. However, his strength coach, Tom Vachet, said that Collison has dramatically improved his strength over the past month without compromising his speed. But given the success of Aaron Brooks in the playoffs, I'm not sure that's going to hurt him as much as it may have in years past. Brooks is proving that smaller guards with great speed are unguardable right now, given the league's prohibition on hand checking. Brooks has more of a scorer's mentality than Collison, but Collison has better floor vision and can play at different speeds.

In fact, you wonder if Collison's numbers weren't artificially deflated playing in Ben Howland's grind-it-out offense. Turn Collison loose on a team like UNC and you could argue he would've put up much higher numbers. However the good news about Collison is that, having played at UCLA, he learned how to play lockdown defense and the half-court game. And he says being able to play both ways will come in handy in the pros.

"I feel like I'm the fastest player in the draft," Collison said. "I'm going to use my quickness. That's how the game is played. Whether you're playing up and down or in the half court, you need quickness. Any time I can use my quickness on the court -- either on the offensive or defensive end -- it's going to be real special for the team that picks me up."

Collison is currently in the mix with a number of other top prospects, but ultimately he'll be competing against the other uber-quick point guards like Ty Lawson, Patrick Mills and Jonny Flynn for a spot in the late lottery to mid-first round. Of the three, Collison is the best shooter, the fastest end to end and the best defender. Whether that's enough to put him ahead of the pack remains to be seen -- but having those four in the gym should be a really interesting workout.

I have to admit I really cooled on Collison since his sophomore year, but after reading this I wonder if he'd be worth it as a third point guard on the team as some emergency depth. Thoughts?

ps. he's projected to go anywhere from 20 to 23 depending on the draft site

hmm, really the only pg I like is Jrue Holiday. Yes, he will take time to develop, but I doubt we find an impact pg in this draft, so maybe take a high potential guy?
Flynn, Maynor, and maybe Lawson intrigue me some as well.
I am really sold on Bayless though, so i would rather draft sam young or blair out of pitt
