Marcus HAD to go. The team was being rebuilt from top to bottom the way that Coach Frank wanted. That included a commitment to defense and reliable outside shooting from every position. He did neither. Getting rid of Marcus cleared a roster spot (which have tangible value, since you are limited to how many players you can have under contract), and cleared up some salary. That the Nets got ANYTHING back for him was a bonus.

If they were unable to trade Marcus, they would have had to cut Ager. I think that all the free agents were already signed by that point, but I could be wrong. So the cost to the Nets would have been the difference in Marcus' and Ager's salaries, PLUS Ager's buyout.

If they can get a late lottery pick in four years to boot . . . that will be a benefit, I think. The Nets should be pretty good by then, and if they wanted, they could package that pick plus their own 20-something pick for a mid-lottery pick.
