Anyone ever done an alaskan cruise (leaving from Seattle)? Any practical tips or recommended excursions?

Lol back in grad school, I took the Bellingham ferry up to Alaska and camped out on the back deck. It's not for everyone, but I had a blast.

I got my parents the Norwegian one, and they said that they were the youngest people on the ship. (They were early 50's at the time)

Also, you probably already know this, but splurge a bit for the window view.

they did an interior cabin. was a super cheap cruise...like 600 bucks each for the week including food, etc.

back in the late 70s it was legal to possess small amounts..dont remember how much..seems like you could grow your own as well..I remember crossing the ferry from the air port into Ketchican, guys with side arms strapped on, rolling joints and lighting up in public...

I don't think any of the cruises charge for food. They do make you check your liquor and charge a small fortune for it. There is a lot of time out at sea, so just lounging by the pool drinking a beer could be expensive.

Money traps are everywhere on board. While it is vacation and you do not want to worry about it, I had co-workers that thought they were getting a cheap vacation only to spend 3X what they were expecting. The cruise lines will stress that the venders not associated with them are not guaranteed to get you back onboard. However, they usually are less than half what they want to charge and perfectly fine.

Could give you more general info about crusies, but will have nothing on Alaska till late next month.

yeah, i did a mexico cruise a few years back. dropped about 2 grand on booze. :MARIS61:

my dad doesn't drink, and my bro probably won't TOO much since he's bunking with my dad. they'll prob keep it real cheap....just looking for ideas on excursions. I think mainly probably they are going to do birdwatching/nature stuff. I honestly don't like excursions at all...have more fun on the cruise getting tanked.

Back around 1980, my parents drove to Alaska, were tired of driving, not much to see, so they took the ferry back.

The round trip is boring if it's all sailing or driving, so you might try mixing it up like they did.

There are positives and negatives. I have not went on one without my wife. For a single person, I am not for sure if I would want to be stuck on a ship. If you get hammered the first night and go ugly, there is no escaping her for a week. My wife picked this one because it is a short drive to Seattle and her father expressed interest. I experienced Alaska much better flying up and renting a truck with friends. Will do the drive up when the kids get older and can appreciate Denali. Will still have fun though.

1. After we get on board, I do not have to drive for a week.

2. There is no additional charge for food or shows. While I tend to be looser with my money on vacation, my wife is different. It makes for a more relaxing time without her stressing about the small stuff.

3. We hit four or five ports. One of them will no doubt be fishing. If we especially like one of the ports, we can make a point of spending more time there on future vacations.

I am thinking about doing the Alaska Cruise next summer. So can't help you now but let me know how it goes when you all get back. By the way, I thought there were some cruises that did include (some - a limited amount of) alcoholic drinks?

I believe there's an unlimited "beer" package. they are changing the rules with wines/champagne...you can usually bring a bottle or two on.

EDIT: My bro said its unlimited beer, wine and house liquor for $300 pp.

alaska on a cruise is a waste though, might as well just see alaska at an imax theater

you wanna get off and rent a skiff and explore all the islands around there, catch shitloads of fish, and fuck lots natives and tourists

if you are in the bar, dont ring the bell on the wall unless you plan on buying a round for everyone in the bar. they will get their drink, by force if needed, if they hear that bell ring

I think around 7-8 bucks for hard alcohol. maybe 6.50 for a beer.

At a $1.79 upcharge from "well" to "premium" that's a no-brainer. Though charging almost 7 for a well drink is highway robbery.
