Alex Smith traded to the Chiefs

Seems like a good spot for him. Still has a great RB in Charles and they should be running some version of the west coast offense and given his 70% accuracy this past year, he should flourish. Can't be any worse that Quinn or Cassel, so for the Chiefs, that's a plus.

a second this year and a like pick in 2014 I think. Reports might have it up now. Not sure this is on ESPN yet

Awesome. If this is true, many posters here were waaaayyyyy off. They were insisting the Niners would have to waive Smith or take a 6th/7th-rounder for him. I said there was no way they waive him, and I was of the mind that the Niners would get far more than a 6th/7th rounder, as there are no real hot QB prospects in the draft (a couple of posters agreed).

I also have a bet with a friend (a die-hard Seahawks fan) that the Niners would get something solid for him. So I need answers.

Awesome trade. Glad that the Niners got something and glad that Smith is going somewhere where he can play. I have no hard feelings for the guy, he stuck with the team and he played well.

Agreed. I am a big Alex Smith fan.

But what a great deal for the Niners! You have to love this, if you're a Niners fan. 5 picks in the first 3 rounds!

Tim Kawakami is reporting next year's conditional pick is fairly similar to this year's pick. I can't quite believe that, but if it's at least 3rd/4th round, what a great deal for SF.

What is it with the Chiefs and them picking up our QB's that get surpassed and dropped to backup?

First Joe. Then Elvis. Now Alex.

It's like the Blazers-TPups all over again.

KC was desparate for a QB and no decent FA wants to play there. They had to give up a second roound pick.

I'm really surprised they didn't get Nick Foles from Philly. Reid loves him, and there is no way in hell he will work in Chip's offense

I don't care why they did it, I'm just happy the Chiefs made the trade

You're preaching to the choir.

That's what I was saying in a prior thread about this. I said there were enough teams desperate and no QB in the draft. People thought the few of us that felt the Niners had solid leverage were crazy, if for no other reason than Smith would be an expensive backup so they felt the Niners would waive him (but it wouldn't really matter with Kaep making so little - it's just a swap of salaries for the roles).

I'm not sure the Niners were going to waive Smith if they didn't find a trade they liked. I think they would have given Kaep more time next year to see whether or not he was a fluke, and if he struggled, I could have seen Harbaugh going back to Smith.

I think the Niners also felt like they owed it to Smith to trade him somewhere he could start. It was rough on the team to bench him when he was doing so well, but Kaep was the future, and JH had to do what he felt was right. Now they're just doing the right thing and trading Smith while he's still in his prime.

You're right, I totally forgot about him. Nice work.

He actually had some solid performances and a couple of good seasons.

I can't take full credit. I knew there was one more besides Elvis and Joe, but I couldn't remember the name. Had to look it up.

I had a feeling there was too. I knew there had been a handful of guys going to the Chiefs that had single names made famous by other individuals as well.

Elvis, Joe, Bono. Smith is the most bland name of them.

awesome deal, if its the chiefs own pick it is #33, and then a decent pick next year? rad

looks like 31,33,61,74,93

1 4th
2 5s
2 6s
2 7s

awesome

Chiefs' pick is #34.

Good deal for the Chiefs, too, IMO. If they can provide protection for Smith, he'll be a solid addition, a QB that come in and provide solid work immediately, rather than trying to develop a rookie. He's better than anything they'd get for a QB at #34 (without hitting the lottery, like Seattle last year or Pitt with Roethlisberger, etc), and I suspect they felt the same way. He is still 28, so he's still on the young side for a starting QB.

Yup, this is one of those rare deals where everyone wins.

I want to see what the Seahawks get for Flynn now.

No no, remember, anything the Niners can do, the Seagulls can do better :devilwink:

I know this was a joke, but I'm pretty sure the games in ATL proved otherwise.

Both teams went down big. But the better team was able to overtake AND win.

Now, Flynn is someone I can see being waived. That's one expensive backup. Or I could see some team offering a late-round pick and take a flyer on him.

I bet if the Cardinals can't draft a QB they will pick Flynn up in a trade.

The draft is in late-April. The SeaChix kind of need to make a decision by April 1. If he's on the roster as of April 1st, his contract is fully guaranteed (or they could waive him and save the money, which is what I suspect teams will want to wait and see if Seattle does), and they may not want to tie up that much salary in a backup quarterback that has, frankly, has really done nothing in his career (not saying he can't, but he's a bit risky right now because he's a very unknown quantity). He really has more trade value prior to April 1st than draft day. Even then, I can't see the SeaChix getting much for him.

I could see the Cards going after him. They are so desperate, and they were after Smith. If Seattle is willing to deal him to help a division rival, I'd have to believe they believe he's garbage. I'm surprised AZ hasn't learned from their experience of picking up other team's hot steaming piles of poo (aka retread backups).
