The ashfall that you are probably remembering was on May 25th.

There was a clear blue sky that day. I was about a half mile from PSU on Barbur Blvd. when the mountain blew. I could see the mountain's plume clearly from my viewpoint.

Went from Gresham to John's Landing today, Wednesday, at NOON, and 84 and I-5 were totally jammed and there was no accident. The traffic seems to be getting worse by the day.

There hasn't been a significant expansion to the freeway system in 40 years. Might be a factor.
