Parsons has somehow all but disappeared from all free agent discussion. Just read somewhere that Dallas won't be offering him a max. Wonder who will.
After another injury? I dunno if he's a priority. I'd offer him money though.

I could have seen us doing it (had we striked out on others) before the latest injury but no way now.

I can't think of one reason why whiteside would choose dallas over Portland. Miami ok it's a fun city and a well run team, but Dallas? Nah. Cuban should've started a rebuild last year.
Reasons

1. No state income tax
2. MUCH better weather during the season

3. Dame seems really obsessed with basketball

If you don't give a ton of fucks about basketball, those are all good reasons not to sign with Portland.

No state income tax means much less than you think.

If he signs with portland it does not mean hes a portland resident. That changes things.

I would love to see a breakdown of:

1. How much money the they save on income tax - because my understanding is that it only applies to games played in Texas.

2. How much time they actually spend in Texas every year.

I could see parsons making his way to golden state if they dont want barnes and cant get durant.

Neil knows what he's doing, our biggest problem this year was defensive intimidation in the paint, when Plumlee was on the bench we had one less passer on the court but our offense didn't really suffer because we have Dame and CJ.

Do i like the idea of signing the package of Hassan to a max contract? no, but Neil's job is to create a functioning basketball team, at least on paper.

And also: if Warriors somehow sign Durant i'm not signing anyone on a big, long contract.

Has Dallas missed the playoffs since Cuban bought the Mavs (after being awful for YEARS before that)? Also, don't they have the fanciest facilities in the league?

I believe you are taxed by the tax code of each state. So his 41 games in Texas would be tax free and then any game he played in a state with state income tax, he would owe that tax.

I think that has more to do with Dirk, and less to do with Cuban constantly tampering with the roster.

Correct.

Since there are 3 teams in Texas a west team will roughly play what 10 games a year in texas. So thats only 31 games you wouldn't pay tax on for living in texas. Thats still a lot of money but is it enough to vault one team considerably over another if they are on a similar level?

You are only playing 1-2 in Dallas compared to 41 they play? For games in Houston and San Antonio, Dallas will also play them in addition to the 41 they will play at home so it's closer to 45.

But Portland (and all the other teams) also play in Houston & SA - so those games are a wash.

ah your right, I overlooked the texas teams playing each other.

Yep but Portland play only 1-2 games a year in Dallas while Dallas play 41. All other games are about the same in terms of Texas/non-Texas.

I'm getting quite optimistic about the chance of getting Whiteside. It happened when I was reading some quotes by Wade and Bosch which were kind of about how he needs to grow up and how he doesn't like to talk sometimes. I think those guys had a good influence on him and that he has grown up, but are those really the Parent-type people he wants to hang out with? I don't think so. I think he wants to hang out with some young guys like the Blazers. So I don't think he is going back to the Heat. And for mostly the same reasons not to Dallas. And since Boston didn't get Butler; is that team strong enough for him to want to go there? Who else might want him, New York? Does he want another dinosaur as GM? Do they really have enough talent?
I also think he is the only one of the three main targets (he, Durant, Horford) who would be OK with joining the Blazers even if he is the only big free agent to do so. His career is an underdog-makes-good career and so I can see him identifying with the Blazers and with the idea that youth can do it.
I also think that "not talking" stuff might just be that he didn't have much to talk about with the old Heat players. If we can't get Horford or Durant, I would rather take a chance on Whiteside than Howard.

Whiteside posted a snapchat of him playing 2k against the Blazers. It's a done deal. He's coming to Portland.

The video game post was obviously a joke. But right before the video of him playing 2k, he posted a video where he said "I'm a business man, that plays basketball"

This hints at what most people think. Miami can't pay him the max, and he's not taking any less than that. If we offer him a max contract, why would he not come here?

Only way I see him signing somewhere else, is if NY or LA offers a max.

I saw that too lol. My first guess was he was playing against McCollum online.

But seriously, Portland embraces off center personalities like Whiteside and I also agree that he would fit in better with our younger players than in Miami. Miami says he's priority number one but didn't they bench him numerous times last season? Wade also has that old school Kobe style leadership where it's respect your elders. That can get tired. Future looks brighter in Portland, and they can offer the max without sacrificing anyone

The LA media sure thinks they are going all in for Whiteside. They need a center and Dwight is not exactly an option.
Whiteside is their first choice, then Horford.
