I know that in previous seasons of American Idol the contract that the contestants sign makes them obligated to the show if they finish in the top 10.

Things like you have to use AI's representation and record contracts.

He probably has someone telling him that he's popular enough to quit the show before his full contract kicks in and can make more money away from AI.

Could be. As I had mentioned, I'd never watched the show until this year, but my wife has told me that, in many cases, the lower placed contestants have gone on to become bigger stars. Go figure.

I just remembered reading that if Jennifer Hudson hadn't been cut when she was she wouldn't have been allowed to be in Dream Girls because of the AI contract they have to sign.
