We already have laws punishing businesses as well as the thieves... I'm simply saying holding out hope that more laws will help anything is wishful thinking.

This problem isn't going to go away until we address our problems with poverty...
And Drugs/Mental Health

At this point it is not illegal for the business to buy the catalytic converters. They don't ask where it is from, so until they make it illegal for the business to buy used cats it will continue to happen. It is $500 plus for a person to replace their cat.
Yes it is. Theft By Receiving is Theft 1 felony no matter the value of the article.

A law punishing desperate people isn't going to solve this. Nobody is getting rich stealing cats.

It will. They aren't going to steal them if they can't sell them

But, the mechanic has plausible deniability. He didn't know it was stolen when he received it.

You can't prevent them from selling them any more than you could prevent people from selling weed or booze.

It has valuable metals. There will always be a buyer.

Trying to control specific items is just pissing in the wind. The police need to enforce the laws we have.

But you don't stop crime with police. You stop crime by educating kids and lifting people out of poverty.

If they can't get money for them, they can't sell them. If the mechanics/junk yards aren't allowed to buy them there is no market. Hence no more cats being stolen.

Will they find something else to steal sure. That is where your fixing poverty comes in.

Mechanics are professionals and yeah they know what a stolen piece looks like. Yes they can deny knowledge to a point but it's a pretty easy bust if they are buying stolen goods. Same dude selling a catalytic converter 3 four times a week all used? C'mon. Plausible Deniability only goes so far. Even more so when someone gets caught and rolls on them and then they the guy in as a set up. Your deniability goes out the window.

Yes they can. Metal scrap is highly monitored now. But i agree. Stop it before they get to that point.

Major problem in a lot of petty crime nowadays is that they are caught and released right away. There's no fear of repercussions.

This isn't a bad idea tbh. They do it at the ghetto Walmart here, the laundry soap and good brand toothpaste and deodorant is all locked up.

Stores should scan IDs for people shopping or refuse entry in areas of high crime/theft/assault/smash and grab.

I don't know why jewelers don't lock their doors and only allow appointments.

There will always be a buyer for rare metals though. The materials are in high demand.

This is a result of the problem, not a cause. We don't have empty prisons... Prisons are overcrowded.

Build more then. Sorry, there's a significant number of criminals that need to be locked up. This society is full of scumbags, and we need to lock them away for the betterment of everyone else doing the right thing and living life with respect for others and lawfully.

They cleared a lot of the prisons due to COVID concerns. We're seeing the effects of releasing criminals back into society now.

We already lock up more of our population than any other country.

Prisons don't prevent crime.

Yes, metal scrap is highly monitored. Yet people steal it and sell it all the time.
Honestly it's nothing like it used to be. They really made a difference with law enforcement and monitoring what is being bought. Also they added regulations about selling. You must have a valid ID and you must be able to receive a check in many instances. Non Ferrous is a huge deal.

You can't compare our country to other countries in these terms. The societies are different. The demographics are different.

The fact is, criminals should be locked up or punished. If you have 10 people, 3 of them are criminals and lock those 3 up, then the other 7 are living in a safer society.

Yep they create a whole mess of problems. Institutionalization is very real.

Hey, if you ever wanted to change your avatar....

And if one of the 7 do something wrong lock them up too. Eventually one guy has the keys and 9 are locked up.
Does that make any sense?

The best way to clear up space in the prisons is to make the death penalty quicker and covering more crimes.

Rapists and murderers should get put to death.

Yes you actually can.

The problem is our shitty gini coefficient. We have too many poor and desperate people.

Who gets to choose exactly what crimes it covers? Hey I know lets let the southern Baptists make the laws? I'll bet the LBGT community would love that?
Lets make being Gay punishable by death? Yes i know that is extreme but you get the point right?

Lets just say Murderers and Rapists. You can't disagree with that, can you?

But then they've moved on to more valuable metals. Hence the problem with cats. The metal is so valuable that you can break down the cats and sell the metals in small qty while still getting a pretty good payday.

Just a couple mechanics could easily buy hundreds of cats per week and recycle them without raising any flags.

We're just chasing our tails.

None of these problems will be solved until we get serious about the real problems.

And that can't happen voting for Biden or pretty much any Republican.

Sounds great until somebody says they saw you kill somebody.

More than 185 people who were sentenced to death in the United States have been exonerated and released since 1973, with official misconduct and perjury/false accusation the leading causes of their wrongful convictions.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wro...ople who, causes of their wrongful convictions.

How many weren't so lucky?
