The one thing that I haven't seen brought up is in the world of Penn State Paterno outranks the AD. Sure on paper the AD oversees all of the coaches but before all of this came to light if Paterno had wanted the AD fired the AD would be gone but if the AD wanted Paterno gone there is no way in hell that would happen.

It's a crime that the AD didn't report the child abuse but the reason it's not a crime for Paterno is that he reported it to "his boss". At Penn State is the AD really Paterno's boss? It will be interesting to follow this and to see if the AD falls on his sword and takes the punishment but if he does talk it wouldn't surprise me if it was Paterno's decision not to go to the cops.

He reported it to his boss because the guy was retired at the time it was reported to him, right? Paterno presumably didn't manage the guy's office or his access or anything else related to his retirement.

In any case, I don't know that he had a moral responsibility to go to the police. The person who saw it probably did, and the person to whom Joe took the information to probably did, but Paterno was in a hearsay situation where (at least in the incident that I am talking about) he had no first-hand knowledge nor institutional responsibility.

While we'll never know what was said, when Paterno told the AD I could see the conversation going one of two ways with the AD saying,

1. "Okay, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will handle it."

or

2. "Fuck Joe, what do you think we should do?"

Since absolutely nothing was done and the AD even went so far as to lie to a grand jury I'm just guessing that the conversation was closer to #2 than it was to #1.

And dear god yes, Joe Paterno had a moral responsibility to do a hell of a lot more than what he did. Legally? No. Morally? Yes!

This... I can't stand SAS but he's right on here. The purpose of Penn State (and every other college/university/school) is to provide higher education to young people (and not just play football). He has shown he does not care about the kids, this is all about his legacy, and they can't let him represent the school for 1 more second.

I can't believe that assistant coach, Mike McQuery, hasn't been fired yet. He testified he saw a man raping a child and he walked away? He saw the man continue to be around children in charities and at his university for years and never followed up on his allegations?

Penn State is an institution that enabled child rape! This is worse than all other NCAA infractions in the history of time combined. If SMU can get the death penalty and USC gets banned from bowl games for infractions that pale in comparison what kind of punishment is justified here?

Pateno should go down as one of the worst coaches of all time. Looking the other way from child rape is beyond inexcusable. Paterno put himself and his school above the safety of defenseless children.

It pisses me off so much I want to quit my job and go into law enforcement and hunt down these bastards. Not just Sandusky, obviously he is a sick devil. But the receivers coach Mike McQuery saw a 10 year old being raped and didn't stop it, he told his dad about it, he told Paterno about it, Paterno told his boss about it, they talked to another university boss about it. A janitor saw another rape that he said was worse than any of his fighting in the Korean war, the janitor told a co-worker. Those janitors told their boss. That is 8 adults that saw rape or heard first hand accounts of it and did nothing to stop it and allowed a pedophile to roam the campus with children until just a few weeks ago. Unbefuckingbelivable.

I feel for the victims and their families, but this is bullshit. JoPa didn't commit any crimes. He reported what he was told, not saw to the AD and the campus police, which in PA are considered real police. He is being made the fall guy, and it is sad. He deserves better

Bullshit! Paterno even said himself he made a mistake and regrets not doing more. You think he'd have done the same bare minimum to not be prosecuted if it was his grandkid someone saw being raped?
 
I get that Paterno is a beloved figure in the community/state, but seriously- fuck that guy.
