It is completely logical from a selfish point of view. However they took an oath to the constitution, not to their reelection.

Very good barf! Thus they know they serve at the pleasure of their constituents. Dang they don't want to have to vote!
That is truly a huge part of the impeachment proceed. In fact it is the ultimate due process.

What was interesting today is I was listening to a report that said one of the republican senators said that if it was a blind vote rather than be an open vote he said he knew of at least 30 senators that would vote for impeachment. It just shows how spineless and chickenshit they are. these people are suppose to be representing the people of their state, not the president.
I saw that too. Remember John McCain's slogan " country first"? Current Republican slogan is "Trump first". Profiles in cowardice.

I also don't want Biden nominated, but I want voters to make the decision.

If a first term Congressperson has the juice to take down a president, all I can say is Ocasio- Cortez 2028.

Is that something that can be done? I don't know why it has to be a public vote.

It's the number needed in the house of representatives. It will never pass the senate though.
435 members in the House. That's how I guessed that it was the number required for impeachment.

Secret ballot is for citizens when voting to protect us from coercion or retaliation. The Senate are our elected representatives. We absolutely should be able to see how they vote. Problem isn't public voting, it's Senators grovelling in fear of a nasty tweet or criticism on Fox.

I mean, you may be right, but I still mostly believe the fear is what the ones who vote for them will do, more than what Trump, or Fox will do. I think if they all thought they could vote a certain way and their constituents would still vote for them, I don't think they'd care what Fox said. Again you may be right, not sure.

The way I see it, the Republicans in the Senate are going to be watching the House proceedings carefully and doing some calculus as to whether the SS Trump is going to be seaworthy and if staying on board amid the hubbub of all of this is going to scuttle their own chances at reelection. You know that there's a centrist element of Republican senators and, if the math is saying that they need to abandon ship, it could be that they leave Trump and the right wingers to go down with the ship.

There's a lot of drama that's going to play out in the House between now and then, however, and I'm still not convinced that they really have to goods on Trump sufficiently pinned down to take him out.

Fair enough

Exactly as that's the only way we know how they are representing the citizens of their respective state. The problem is it seems we have a lot of spineless senators. The republican party died (unfortunately) back in 2016 and it has become the trumpublican party. If they choose to keep enabling him then they deserve to go down as well.

How can GOP supporters still staunchly get behind a guy who so blatantly just said today that he wants to effectively execute an AMERICAN spy?

Blind sheep. Patriots my ass. Lincoln is rolling his grave every time this guy opens his mouth.

Because they love it. They love to be represented by a bulletproof guy that can do whatever he pleases regardless of illegality. They love seeing liberals get upset. It's sad. If it was a Dem president who did this they would be calling for his head.

One of the reasons I support Warren is that when she was asked whether a position of hers was popular she said that leadership is doing what is right.

And her poll numbers keep going up.

Very good Lanny!
There are 235 democrats in the house. Why the hell don't they impeach the President instead of talking out their ass daily?

Perhaps you can help them count.

Nope!
We had a disgusting dumb ass Dem president that the Rep attempted to impeach. I thought it a huge mistake, the bugger could not do his job while were attack often by terrorist.
There is a very strong reason the Constitution lead us in the direction of not harassing the current President. We need him!!!! I disagreed when the Reps pulled this shit on Clinton, the bad results are now history. Trump is tougher, so no telltale damage yet, but
it ain't right. The voting booth is the right way, the prudent way, the Constitutional way.

No, we most definitely do not need the current president.

The voting booth is the right way, the prudent way, the Constitutional way.

Impeachment is in the constitution. Right there on the page in the original text.
The voting booth isn't in the constitution, at least not in the original text.

And you are an originalist, are you not?

No shit! Quibble much!Well as you know it is by the electoral process. Article II P2;
"Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors,
equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the
Congress..."

And as you also know this is done in each State today, by counting the results of the ballet box.

Yep, I tend to favor the Originalist philosophy but have no reticence when a solid correction is proposed and approved via the amendment process.

And you are an originalist, are you not?

I don't think you know what the term means. You seemed to have just misused it.
So before we go any further, explain your concept to the forum.

I will check in tomorrow.

Ha ha. Your thesis is amusing, but I'm afraid I'll have to take 10 points off for "miss used".
