Antoine Wright

How good do you people think Antoine Wright will do for his rookie year? I think he won't have too much of a spectacular year with the Nets mainly because the players he would have to substitute for are players who will get most of the time in the games (E.G. Vince or RJ). Also from the stats he got in the summer league, he won't be able to get those stats because of the level of play will be higher and the players will be better.

Depends on who we resign during the off-season. If we bring Buford, Thomas, and/or Best back and keep Planinic, then we probably won't see a huge impact from him. Hopefully he can be productive off the bench when VC and RJ are tired or even injured.

I feel like Wright will be a great player in the future probably average around eighteen to twenty points in his prime. This season however with the Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson trio I don?t see him having that big a impact in terms of statistics. I still think he will be one of the top rookies in the league I predict his statistics will look something like this...

I think he will be a good all around player he has all the weapons to be a factor in the three main columns assists, rebounds, and points. I wish we could see the Nets go with a small lineup for certain stages of the games in which they would play Wright at the three and Jefferson at the four. I think Wright might end up a victim of circumstance; with the wings that Jersey already has, it's going to be tough for the kid to get many minutes. He'd do best to play hard on defense, and continue improving his outside jumper, because any team can use shooters who can defend. I see him averaging somewhere around 5 or 6 points, with the occasional big game, with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. I think playing with a playmaker like Kidd will only help him grow as an all around player. He showed a willingness and ability to get his teammates involved last year at Texas A&M.

Same here I wanted the Magic to grab him at the 11 spot because I think he can do good in the future.

I dont think Rodney, Travis or Billy Thomas is coming back. The Nets will probably add either Wesley Person, Allan Houston, Doug Christie *cross my fingers in hope* or some type of shooter along that line. As far as Antoine Wright goes, I think he will have every chance in the world to be apart of Coach Franks regular rotation cause I think the hope for Zoran Planinic is fading. And Rod Thorn recently said that he may use the anmesty clause aka the Allan Houston rule, hopefully he uses it on Mercer. So Antoine Wright will get his shot. And if he can display range, I think he will be the 4th wing player behind Carter, Jefferson and hopefully Christie or Houston. If not then I think it opens up another opportunity for Zoran Planinic, who with the arrival of Wright in the draft is the odd man out of rotation, imo.

4.5 RPG? How about a 'No'? He won't even get that many rebounds even if he started. He's too soft to be a force in the rebounding department and he better learn to stay away from camping in the perimeter because that ain't going to help him.

In his three years at college the lowest rebound total he had was 4.1 a game in his second season he averaged 5.9 his last season and 6.1 his freshman year. So he has actually averaged over 5 rebound for the better part of his college career. Does that necessarily mean it will translate to the NBA? No, but you saying he is soft, and there is no way he will average that you have nothing to base that on. He is 6?7? extremely athletic, and has averaged over or around those numbers most of his career.

The logic is based on the fact that I've watched the Aggies play and he was playing alongside the likes of Jones and Pompey, both extremely undersized to play C/PF even at the college level, and it should be a given that the wings are expected to go after the loose ball under that kind of circumstance. He is soft, if the games I've seen are of any indication. He shies away from contact and as a result he doesn't get to the line as often as he should. Stats don't tell the whole story about a player, but since you went as far to say Wright is 'extremely athletic', I'll give you a pointer. An NBA player with a 29-inch vertical, a 11.45 second lane agility time, and 3.41 second 3/4 court sprint is not and should not be considered athletic, let alone 'extremely athletic'. Er... I was saying Joseph Jones and Marlon Pompey were undersized, who played center and power forward in Texas A&M, not Antoine Wright. It would be beyond delusional to suggest that Wright can play PF/C.

He is soft, and soft players usually don't get rebounds on the NBA level. You keep bringing up stats but if your theory was right, don't you think the likes of Michael Olowokandi - who averaged 22.2 ppg / 11.2 rpg in college - and Rafael Araujo would've averaged similar rebounding numbers as their college numbers? Michael Olowokandi never averaged a double double in the NBA, let alone a double digit rebound average, and he's been in the league for 7 years. If stats were that accurate in predicting a player's future, teams wouldn't need General Managers, or scouts for that matter, and everyone who were successful in college will automatically be all-stars in the NBA.

Antoine Wright actually measured 6' 5 1/4" without shoes and 6' 6 1/4", and his vertical reach / wingspan weren't that impressive either, at 8' 8 1/2" and 6' 8 3/4" respectively.

When those two players were selected in the lottery I can guarantee you the teams that selected them thought they would average pretty good statistics. Of course college statistics do not always equal NBA statistics if you read my previous posts you would have seen that I stated that already. However, you are trying to say he is soft by your assessment. The best thing you have to predict his statistics right now is the things he did in college and those are my predictions from that. You can have your opinion go ahead I will make my predictions from his past performances, not on weather another person thinks he is soft or not.

Jerry Rice put up some horrible numbers in the 40, and other wide out drills in the NFL combine we all know how good a player he was. Draft camps/combines don?t tell you a lot there are things known as game day players.

When I said "it should be a given that the wings are expected to go after the loose ball under that kind of circumstance", it meant because Wright was playing alongside undersized C/PF, he would have and should have averaged at least 4-5 rpg, which he did.

I get that you are stubborn, but you have to admit something when it's due. I'll give Antoine Wright that he's a good shooter, but he's by no means an athletic player. Sure he will have a highlight here and there but if you are expecting him to be someone like JR Smith or Josh Smith, you're completely wrong, and any knowledgeable member of Justbball.com will tell you that.

If you had seen him play, you wouldn't make claims like he's 'extremely athletic'. He is a good perimeter shooter, but not the athletic freak that you make him out to be. Ok sure get whatever feeling you want. Did I say he was going to be a KR Smith? I said he is athletic if the word extremely bothered you I will remove it. With Jason Kidd in the backcourt he will make him look good on a lot of plays. He has the jumping ability and speed to get up and down the court which along with Jason Kidd would give him a few extra highlights.

It affects stock well, because they have head to head competitions, and are the best judgment on what type of player the general managers feel like they would be drafting. Also a lot of times GM?s don?t get to see all these players during the season, and at times it is their firs took at these players.

Those point guards average better rebounding numbers than that because they play 35 minutes a game. Are you going to tell me that Antoine Wright is going to play 35 minutes a game, over Vince and Jefferson? He's coming off the bench, and probably will not average more than 10~15 mpg.

Did I say that? Well there is your answer. I think Wright can play 20-25 minutes since he is a swingman, with his size I think he can get 4.5 rebounds a game. You act like I said he would get an extraordinary amount of rebounds. 4.5 is not that hard to come by.

I helped your case? I stated that it is the best things general mangers have to go by. Which if they don?t follow could cost them their jobs. It is also the first chance they get to see the players. How did I help your case? I still feel that paper measurements are being taken way to highly these days in the league, and the pure basketball player is getting fewer opportunities because of it.If you mean because I said it matters to the general mangers I guess I helped you out. Yes, you did. Instead of going against your idea that draft camps don't matter much, you went with my idea that they do factor in quite a bit. You fail to comprehend your own point, and I won't be surprised if you didn't understand why we're debating either. Measurements are just as important as the players' individual talents. Which player would you take, considering that they had about the same level of talent? A 5'11 guy or a 6'3 guy?

True you make a good point, but a lot of times two players are not the same in talent. I said I feel too much is being put into measurements which I feel is true. I would not be surprised if you do not know why were arguing if you want to circulate around that.

Correction I don?t need to prove it. Only point I argued was that you stated measurements are not stats, which in fact they are. Even if they are not applicable in this case. It does not change the fact of what they are.

Can you tell me what type of reply you would have liked from me when you made those comments? How about we just end this now. You are trying to turn this into more than it?s worth a prediction thread you are taking it way to personally, and feel like I am some how disrespecting you because I do not accept what you are stating. If you feel that way I apologize, but I have my own view on this topic, and their is nothing to acknowledge one thing you have proven to me that I acknowledge is that it was wrong to call him a ?extremely athletic? guy. Okay, simply put, <u>in my opinion</u>, I don't believe Antoine Wright would average 4.5 rpg if he plays a backup's minutes. If he starts in the case of Vince or Jefferson's injury, and plays more than 30 MPG, then he might have a chance of getting 4-5 rpg. I did get a little too emotionally involved considering that this is only a predictions thread, and I regret it.

Anyway, to get back on topic, my predictions of Antoine Wright's rookie season are the following:

Playing as a 6th or 7th man:

18 MPG
9.7 PPG
2.7 RPG
2.5 APG

I think his impact on the Nets is going go beyond his statistics. With Carter and Jefferson at the 2 and 3, you have great athleticism and good but not great shooting. The Nets are really going to find him useful, when he comes into games and provides an accurate stroke from the 3 point line. He can have impact similar to Kyle Korver, without sacrificing athleticism or creating a defensive liability. IMO Wright is going to be the Nets first option off the bench (partly due to a weak bench).

Didn't really read the thread but if Antoine Wright can be that energy guy RJ was his rookie year, then he would have more than filled expectations for me. Antoine, imo, is already a better scorer at this point though not as good defensively, and a shade under athletically. Ever since RJ left the bench, we've been missing that type of energy from the bench that could carry the second unit. Hopefully he's that answer.
