Politics Apple to hire 20,000, open second headquarters and pay $38 billion tax bill on overseas profits

In perspective, $350B is about 1/2 of TARP, which some people credit with saving the banking system.

$350B is about 1/2 the stimulus bill that Obama rammed through a filibuster proof congress in 2009. (Tell me about running up debts some more. Obama ran up $10T in debt, the most in history).

You guys caused an emergency then. There is no emergency to solve now. Other than getting Republicans elected with a short-term sugar high, which will cause a downer.

LOS ANGELES — Apple, which has come under major criticism for building much of its popular products in China, announced a sweeping set of moves partially tied to the recent tax bill, including paying $38 billion in taxes from profits made overseas and opening a second corporate campus.

The iPhone maker said it will spend $55 billion with domestic suppliers and manufacturers in 2018 and will create over 20,000 new jobs through hiring at existing Apple campuses and a new one for technical support. Apple already employs 84,000 people in all 50 states.

"Apple is a success story that could only have happened in America, and we are proud to build on our long history of support for the US economy," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.

In a news release, Apple didn't mention moving production of iPhones to the U.S. They are currently designed at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, but built at the Foxconn plants in China.

Apple said it anticipates repatriation tax payments of approximately $38 billion as required by recent changes to the tax law.
Meh.....You got a huge chubby over those Carrier and Ford jobs Trump was going to keep in America.....and we’ve seen how that turned out in the end. This is just another “believe it when you actually see it” Apple PR brand of bullshit. For a guy who shit bricks over Obama running up the deficit, you’re one happy camper when running it up it helps your personal bank account. And anyone who believes the current stock market rally is real for the long haul gets exactly what they deserve. How many times are we actually going to keep buying this kind of hustle before we wise up? Probably only when the hands pulling the levers have vacuumed up every dollar in existence.....

No success is good enough?

So it seems.

But the company said in a statement: “More than 1,100 jobs remain at the Indianapolis facility in keeping with our 2016 commitment.”

Not me guys.

And I wouldn't have spent the TARP money or the "emergency" stimulus money either.

"emergency" in quotes because it's a technicality that allowed Obama and Democrats to bust the budget beyond absurdity.

My investments have made a few thousand dollars since deregulating big business but unfortunately....probably not enough to compensate for the rising health care costs I'll be paying from here on out....then you need to subtract the legal pot money since this American business is not allowed to bank (5.5 billion just in California) but is already stateside......then subtract the cost of the wall and add military escalation.....yeah...the big guys are cashing in early. I split my retirement accounts just to be safe...unfortunately in Oregon capital gains taxes offset investment gains far too often....will pay more in tax in the end. Apple coming back is fine....PCs rule asia...Apple has had a hard time controlling that market over there but they rule the States....makes sense they'd move home. I'm all for success ....but 10 years from now it might not look so successful

Elon Musk saved the auto industry.

The mandate was repealed, but the support payments for insurance (from ObamaCare) are still a liability the government has to cover.

I thought we saved the auto industry.....Toyota started the trend for hybrid and electric tech...Musk improved that....not sure I'd credit him with saving the industry as it's struggling to sell cars as it is

If GM would have gone bankrupt, and out of business, Tesla would still be the new Auto Industry.

People aren't buying the cars because they're green, they're buying them because they have a lot of money to spend.

Musk is making product people want. GM wasn't.

It's not our job to bail out companies when they make massive mistakes over long period of time.

Here...you drive to any parking lot filled with cars and count the Tesla's......I promise you Toyotas far outnumber them...American trucks are still popular though...

Fine. Toyota saved the auto industry, too.

Didn't know USA Today was fake news.

I was a journalism major in high school and college for a couple of years. Whenever we went to AP Seminars or press gatherings, the USA Today contingent were always the equivalent to the "Short Bus" school crowd. The La Times and SF Chronicle people would laugh and call them the "McPaper" because of their style and content. Now that was before the print officially died and the Murdoch model of editorializing became popular in American media, but I still think they hold true to the same fast food style of journalism. Quick, dirty, and easy to digest.

I almost can't believe what people watch these days. I caught 5 minutes of access Hollywood or whatever the one with Slater from Saved by the Bell is on. Someone offered Kanye and Kim K 5 million dollars for baby pictures.

On what fucking planet are we on that baby pictures are worth 5 million dollars?

I mostly agree with you, but Tesla's stock dropped because they literally weren't producing cars fast enough to keep up with the demand for them.

and frankly...they are not affordable cars for most folks

The government gave thousands of $dollars in rebates to rich people who could afford the cars.

Tesla is now making a $35K car that is affordable for the masses, though not for people making little money.

You can lease one of those for $1500 down and $250/mo.

This will pay for a Canadian wall along with the Mexico wall.

My paycheck today is another $90 more than my last one in 2017. That is, $110 more, total. My first paycheck was only $20 more.

Only an apple owner would believe his magical crapple product appriciates like real estate. Maybe its because crapple owns the real estate in their head that was once used for thinking.
That is awesome. I bet if you look deep into HCP's eye you'll see an apple logo.

And a Lakers logo
