Famous question posed by Ronald Reagan.

it’s all you really need to think when you go to the voting booth this November.

Is that really all I need to think about? Because I'd have to answer yes, I am presently better off than 4 years ago. If that's all that matters, then I'd be voting Trump...and that's not happening.

I'd like to think that choosing a president--or any political office, really--should be about more than just how it affects me personally.

I'm slightly better off, but it has zero to do with the president and 100% to do with the raises I got from my boss.

I’d say for a good portion of Americans it would be a resounding, No.

My 401k is down about 15k in the last few months.

MAGA

COVID

Fixed....

Howe can one actively say that Trump is wrong in trying to open up the country but then blame him for the economic fallout of closing down?

I don't disagree that that's the case. And one would think that the plight of "a good portion of Americans" should theoretically be a larger consideration that simply my own situation; hence my skepticism over the logic in your title/OP.

Due to Covid perhaps. Prior to this, not so sure. Personally sitting at a resounding, Yes.
Dont like Trump at all but before covid yes for all my family. Son's and daughters have done extremely well on their jobs and even profit sharing bonus's.
Our investments have done marvelous and are bouncin back since C19. We ain't complaining.

Putting all ugly politics aside, before the C19 the economy was booming, and if you don't agree with that, Then you aint American!

So. Trump caused 401K's to plummit the last few months? Trumps been in office 3 years. The covid started a few months ago. But yet, Trump is responsible for a plummiting 401K?

How was the 401K in december compared to four years ago?

Shouldn't that be the legit and valid question?

Yes. it's due to Covid, but his slow reaction to it (or lack of) did impact how it has impacted all of us.

I’d rather make less money, and have less hate/ animosity and cultural divide in the world. Honestly it has been rough bringing up kids and trying to live a quality life with this toxic hate floating around everywhere. It used to not be ok to treat other people so poorly.

I agree with this 1000%.

Whats frustrating to me is, you saying this will just bring out people blaming each other side for being the "real" source of hate and animosity.

Thinking the cause of hate and animosity is a 50/50 is in itself is laughable and ignorant of reality, but that's besides the point.

4 years ago my retirement savings were 10s of thousands of dollars better....the world wasn't headed for military expansion and cold war...racism wasn't on the rise and we were respected around the world..also my heart hadn't failed twice4 years ago so yeah....I was better off 4 years ago than today....and I trusted the president to be telling me the truth...the good is I now have a new grandson to enjoy moving forward

Something interesting I just thought about, four years ago I was working in Brazil and was very proud to say I was from the United States…..... As I had planned on working in Tokyo this summer, my wife and other family members made sure to remind me to tell people that I was Canadian. Couldn’t argue with them. I’m somebody who served this country and right now, I’m embarrassed to say I’m from it.

I have had many changes in my life since 4 years ago so it is honestly hard to say. Everything is relative. As far as that concerning how I will vote, it doesn't have much of an effect.

That's overall, but what about you? Im finding it hard to pointpoint on my end. but it seems I almost doubled a year and a half ago and now im back to where I was at in 2015. Id have to research my own statements more to fully understand which was better for me and where the breaking points were.

I think its only fair to compare the two admins prior to Covid though. Regardless of thoughts of acting sooner, the global economy took a huge hit and we couldn't have stopped that no matter what we did.

Ah man dont be...one of the reasons things are sideways now is because of freedoms we have, and can be both a positive and detriment at any point in time. But the nice thing is we can change it as a people and look forward.
People still want to come here to enjoy the freedoms we have and even take in the Blazers or Ducks. Quack!

And Hoover should have been judged excluding the depression, I expect some of you think.

And maybe in some ways that would have been fair - Hoover wasn't entirely responsible for the depression by any stretch.

But that aint the way people think.

Happens on your watch and your response is shitty - you get blamed.

I think you'll find that tourism from abroad is down about 98%, and I predict it will remain that way for some time.

Right now we look to the rest of the world like idiots swimming in a sewage lagoon.

No.

My kind's rights are being curtailed by the current administration, and various states, emboldened by the president. I live in more actual, physical danger now than I did in May, 2016. My kind are now very loudly not welcome here, and that environment did not exist in 2015 when I came out. I'm very lucky to live in Portland, but even the suburbs feel less safe.

I don't know if embarrassed is the right word to use. I'm not sure what word to use though, because it's kind of related to pride. And while I had no say as to where I was born (thus I'm not "proud to be an American", it was the luck of the draw), I do think there's a sense of ignominy. I'm ashamed that the government is acting the way it does, it's unAmerican.

What I've been told, by foreigners, they separate the Government from the people, much in the same way when we talk about North Korea or Russia, we're disparaging the Government and not the people from the country.

I couldn't agree more.

Please, this same BS happened when Bush was in office. People would say they sewed Canadian flags on their backpacks so they wouldn't get harassed, or so they said. Anytime people don't like the president, they get all prissy and shit and pull up this hacked up urban legend. Its passive aggressive whining.

I have a policy for Forum discussions: don't type anything you wouldn't feel comfortable saying to somebody's face. Imagine if you applied that policy, how much nicer this place would be.
