We have been prepared since a week before hurricane Ike. Our neighbor told us we should get a generator, water and other hurricane kit items. Ike came and we had no power for 11 days, in the heat of summer here in Texas. Without the generator, we would have been screwed.

Rarely happens and only a couple hrs when it does. Fireplace is ready to light, candles at hand.

Another thing to add to the supplies, reading materials of all types, cause if we have to go an extended period of time without the internet, you better be ready. I have a few novels and stuff like that, but I don't own any porno mags anymore with the interwebz always available. And if the power goes out, there really are limited activities to do.

Had a damn cute neighbor that moved out 6 months ago and was replaced by a gaggle of dudes. I don't think I'll fix them anything. But regardless, you don't know if a crossbeam will fall on your loved one. If one does, you may skip a couple days, but then you'll be spanking monkey. Or what if you ate the last bowl of chilli and she pissed at you, still need to release your stress. I can only use my 8 by 8 poster of a bike so many different ways.

I assume that the President will get on the TV/radio as soon as the event happens, with the message that you are required to turn in any and all food, water, medical supplies and emergency supplies. You will be commanded, on pain of arrest, to turn all of these items in to FEMA for redistribution. Why should you get to weather the crisis in relative comfort, while poor people that didn't, or couldn't prepare will suffer? This is where you and the President live, no?

I'll just go see FEMA and get some of your stuff, but I want to thank you in advance for your assistance.

I have an earthquake kit - candles, matches, flashlight & batteries, wrench to shut off gas if needed, food for self and cats, basic first aid stuff, blankets, water, spare contact lenses, other stuff. I have a garden that supplies food (whether or not there is running water makes a big difference). Can turn barbecue into stove if need be. Obviously there are degrees of disaster. A 10 hour shutdown is bad but my house flattened and the neighborhood on fire from ruptured gas lines is much worse. There are some things you just can't plan for. I'm out of tsunami range, but how do you plan for that? Sometimes you just have to get out.

It automatically shuts off the gas in the event of an earthquake. There is no need to turn off the gas manually, just in case you can't get to the gas line.

It's cheap and the gas company will install it for you for cheap.
