@ChrisBHaynes: The yet to be named AFL team will be owned by Terry W. Emmert, CEO of Clackamas-based Emmert International. Press conference tomorrow.

AFL??? Is this a joke? Another step down team from the pros headed to Portland.

@ChrisBHaynes: Now that #Blazers secure AFL team, hear @Dame_Lillard's bro, Houston Lillard (@flyguyhuey5), an IFL QB, has interest playing for Portland.

I really wish the MC could get taken down and put Baseball there, and have Hockey at the RG

Why do you hate dead veterans?

it can be called Memorial Field/Stadium/Rose Garden presented by Alaska Air Moda. I have no problem with the name.

You can remember them while still having a building that is of use.

Yes, because something that is outdated, unneeded and no longer wanted is the best tribute to dead veterans.

There is a really classless joke to be made here...

btw, didn't Portland already have an AFL team that failed?

how about they bring an NHL team here instead? IMHO, this pretty much puts an end to the thoughts of getting an NHL team.

Yeah the NHL will have a hard time competing with the mighty forest dragons.

If we can get an NHL team, then we can worry about what to do with the Arena team. It is good business to keep the Moda Center busy.

For years, one of the biggest reasons an NHL team was never brought here was the potential competition for dollars with the Blazers, and how much the Blazers didn't welcome it.

It (AFL) is a cheaper option, and one that has less direct competition with the Blazers, but appears to be a legit chance bring more excitement to the Rose Quarter. But the league, and it's teams are so unstable.

the AFL brings 9 games to the Garden (and yes, that doesn't mean an NHL team couldn't play). That seems small potatoes.

I think it's settling. It's a sports league that suspended a season once, loses teams almost every year AND was already attempted here and failed (the team left after 3 seasons, and went to Oklahoma. And folded after 2 more seasons). And you can't necessarily use the economy (or weather...bazinga!) for why the Forest Dragons bombed here. It was in 97-99 that they were in Portland. The economy wasn't bad then.

If they're still interested and trying to bring an NHL team to Portland, I don't care. But I think it's placating people who want more events to go to.

To me, this is akin to getting excited that single A (or triple A at best) baseball is in the area. Woohoo...yippy.

Btw, is there a reason why Portland seems to always have one of these three options for baseball in the area? single A, triple A or nothing? Have they ever had double A baseball? Is Double-A just a regional thing?

Interesting--Emmert also owns the Portland Chinooks. Guy loves his minor league sports...

PA has been trying, but it seems he wants to get a bargain price on an established team, rather than paying an expansion fee. Not sure if it's just a business decision or an ego thing. It's a sign that NHL will not happen in the near term, but I don't believe an AFL team will have any effect on a possible NHL team coming in the future though.

Especially since it won't last more than a couple of years anyway.

I was in a Chinook unit in Germany, we were part of the first brigade-sized element to deploy from Europe to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield.

And then you woke up and realized you were playing video games in your moms basement! BAMFAMS!

Anyone here ever been to an arena league game?
I went once in Chicago when I still lived there. meh it was neat as a novelty briefly, but not super stoked about it. Doesn't hurt, so bring on all the sports we can get, though, I suppose.
