Terrible way to start this year.

Man I hope she makes it through this.

Wow...it says she was shot point blank in the head. It's amazing that she survived that, but I really hope that it doesn't end up worse than death, like loss of a great deal of mental function.

Re: U.S. Congresswomen Assassinated

Apparently shooter yelled something before he shot. Uh oh...

He shouted La Raza, which is the militant Mexican movement to invade and overthrow the SW United States.

Good old Palin and her execution map. Giffords was 4th on the list.

Again, perhaps not the time to politicize this moment. While I agree that is distasteful given the current situation, were Rep. Giffords not in this situation, would you have posted that?

A brief statement released by President Obama:

This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tucson, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded.

We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.

And one from Sarah Palin:

My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

- Sarah Palin

And Speaker Boehner:

“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff. An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country."

You do realize that this woman has been threatened constantly by the Tea Party, her office was even vandalized. Here was a nice event that was held in attempting to get her out of office.

Interesting.

Interesting? Not really, a terrible tragedy that was probably motivated by months of hate speech and downright bullshit rhetoric coming from right-wing radio and Fox News.

Considering the amount of violent rhetoric that has been permeating our political discourse for the past 2 years, I'm surprised it took this long.

It hasn't, the FBI has been very good about getting to these people before they reach their targets.

Sadly they have not stopped all of them:

Well, it seems highly likely at this point that she was shot for political reasons, so I'm not sure how you can avoid that.
If it turns out the shooter is an angry ex-lover of hers, then maybe so.

That's downright silly.

If the shooter was motivated by the anti-immigration issue, then it is more likely some things she's been saying all along that people on the left and right seem to agree upon equally.

I think a criminal investigation is called for into Palin and other tea party leaders who have deliberately incited these violent acts.

The venomous hate they spew is far more dangerous than yelling "FIRE!" in a crowded theater, which can send you to prison.

Good example of hate speech right in that post there.

A citizen in her district gives an anecdotal moment from his life this morning.

I am standing in the aisle at Costco when I found out my Congresswomen, Gabrielle Giffords, has been shot dead up on the north side.

While I’m scrambling with my phone, two couples in front of me are talking about it and suddenly I hear one of the women say, “Well, that’s to be expected when you’re so liberal.”

And the other woman says, “Ohh, so we get to appoint a Republican?”

I did not trust myself to speak. I’m a Soldier. Please remind me what country I am fighting for? At least seven people are dead. She happens to be the only member of Congress married to an active duty military — he’s a Navy officer serving as an astronaut.

You are being very dense if you honestly believe there has not been an extreme message of hate coming from the right.

The local news coverage in Arizona is stating that she's had a forceful anti-immigration stance. I think that's an extreme message of hate coming from the left.

Giffords warned of this:

"They really need to realize that the rhetoric and firing people up, and, you know, even things for example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. when people do that, you gotta realize there's consequences to that action."

They just announced that one of the deaths was that of a child.

As always, he'll use the Mad Cow as an excuse.

I don't see any hate, I see a broad accusation yes.

What do you see on Fox News that you consider hate, if not broad accusations?

They're saying the shot went "through and through" her head, but they're quite optimistic she's going to survive.

When you hear "shot in the head," you think of something like the JFK assassination - small hole in one side, large hole where the bullet came out, and shot through the brain.

We don't know where she was shot - hopefully it went through her jaw and cheeks and nowhere near her brain.

Fingers crossed.
