I've tried kicking around the idea of the elimination of the draft, tied to each team getting different salary slots based on record. Wouldn't necessarily eliminate tanking, but being worst wouldn't immediately mean you get the best player, if they don't want to play there. I think there's hundreds of kinks to work out of it, but if you generically took the rookie scale, and applied it to each team. So worst team has 11.5 to spend on their 1st rounder, 2nd pick has 10.3, etc. Maybe you still have a lot to to see who gets the most money, but 11.5 doesn't guarantee you Flagg if he prefers, say, SA with the #2 slot, Philly with 3, etc. Teams trade $$ instead of picks.

What you do is have the draft, but give everyone that didn't make the playoffs the same odds at getting the first pick. Then there is no need or incentive for tanking.

I think you could still have teams tanking that would make the play in. If they had the same odds as the 13th worst team as the 1st team, and the draft had someone like Wemby, and the team thought they overachieved and had no chance at contending, they may tank too.

It just isn't as big of an issue as people are making it. Who cares? I rarely hear the NFL complaining about this and they don't even have the lottery.

The lottery was supposed to solve tanking. And it has to a degree.

Just leave it alone and fine people you can prove are blatantly tanking.

Wow, so we could have had Oden, but instead of a rookie contract, we would have given him the max.

Then tanking would happen higher in the standings to make play-in but blow it and get maybe the #1 pick.

Silver is considering getting rid of the NBA draft and making all rookies free agents to solve tanking.
Terrible idea. Unless the goal is to favor big market and marquee teams. Come to think of it....

Don’t see how they think this would ever lead to competitive balance.
