I've tried kicking around the idea of the elimination of the draft, tied to each team getting different salary slots based on record. Wouldn't necessarily eliminate tanking, but being worst wouldn't immediately mean you get the best player, if they don't want to play there. I think there's hundreds of kinks to work out of it, but if you generically took the rookie scale, and applied it to each team. So worst team has 11.5 to spend on their 1st rounder, 2nd pick has 10.3, etc. Maybe you still have a lot to to see who gets the most money, but 11.5 doesn't guarantee you Flagg if he prefers, say, SA with the #2 slot, Philly with 3, etc. Teams trade $$ instead of picks.

What you do is have the draft, but give everyone that didn't make the playoffs the same odds at getting the first pick. Then there is no need or incentive for tanking.

I think you could still have teams tanking that would make the play in. If they had the same odds as the 13th worst team as the 1st team, and the draft had someone like Wemby, and the team thought they overachieved and had no chance at contending, they may tank too.

It just isn't as big of an issue as people are making it. Who cares? I rarely hear the NFL complaining about this and they don't even have the lottery.

The lottery was supposed to solve tanking. And it has to a degree.

Just leave it alone and fine people you can prove are blatantly tanking.

Then tanking would happen higher in the standings to make play-in but blow it and get maybe the #1 pick.

A quote from the article: "However, if Silver and his advisers decided the only way to stop tanking, and thereby protect paying customers from forking over money to watch their teams lose on purpose, was to stop the draft altogether and turn rookies into free agents, that same league official said it would get serious consideration."

So if it's the only possible way to get teams to stop tanking then they'd give in consideration. A rotating draft would make more sense where you don't consider records at all. A lotto with flat odds for the first 5 picks would make a lot of sense too.

All I'm saying is there are a lot of options to try in order to get rid of tanking before the league just does away with the draft.

The only true (not realistic) way to get
them to care is to monetarily incentivize winning.

The thing is players don't tank... besides a game a few seasons ago with the Mavs and the game the Jazz are being fined for, I haven't seen coaches tank a lot either.

Usually the way teams tank is the fron office shuts players down.

I don't know what incentive there would be to tank if the first 4 picks were chosen by a lotto with flat odds and the best tanking could get you is most likely the 5th spot in the draft.

Getting rid of the draft all together is a nightmare for small market teams. I don't think that matters because I sincerely doubt they'd ever actually get rid of the draft but I guess we'll see.

They need to just let well enough alone. The draft is rigged just right for certain teams every year and the Spurs like it that way as well as The Mavs and the Hawks.
I mean what would us Blazer fans have to complain about if the did away with the draft and made it a clean slate.
It’s also a nice built in excuse for GM’s not being able to get the team contending quickly.

Edit- please tell me I didn’t have to use green font on that post.

So World just has to win this game by 3 and they’re in the final.
it's a crazy format. If you needed to win by 2 to rech the finals and the opponent was up by two and you had the last shot, your only option is to send the game to extra time and win there because winning by one gets you the win for that game while simultaneously eliminating you out of the finals
