I believe this one is NO. They are now over the cap and can't absorb Miller

I agree that is why I said we would be "a PG guard away from being a contender". But I think whenever you are a player away......some how a Vet is willing to take a chance on being the final piece. Like Barkley when he almost begged to be traded to Portland in the early 90's. I think a starting line up of Howard, LMA, Batum and Matthews would quickly attract that capable ball handler. Dwight made it to the finals with a similar cast of talent.
My point is that we'd still be a star point guard (or shooting guard?) away from contention, Look at that Magic team when they ran into the Lakers, Certainly Bynum and Gasol made a big difference, but where Orlando really had no answer was on the wing against Kobe. Hedo as their shot creator was OK, but he wasn't a star.
Personally I'd rather see what Lillard can develop into, even if we could somehow flip him for D12. I don't know that he's going to be a top 10-15 player in the league, but I'll take that longshot over the longer shot that adding Howard and then waiting for Mystery Point Guard X adds up to.
Dwight Howard would sign with the Mavs next year? the Mavs are an old team and not getting younger or better. I don't see them as contenders in 2 years barring big changes. Honestly I don't even list them as sure playoff team this upcoming season.
I agree, Nate, in the playoff hunt. But as of this moment, I'd list as sure playoff teams (barring catastrophic injuries to key players) OKC, Lakers, Spurs, Clippers. I'd list Dallas, Houston, Denver, Memphis, New Orleans and yes Blazers as possible. GSW if they can stay healthy (good luck). Minny and Sacto as unlikely.
Am I forgetting anyone?

As a free agent, Dwight would sign with Brooklyn. No doubt in my mind.
.... with what cap space? They just maxed Deron, they've got Joe Johnson, and they also signed Wallace.... plus they extended Lopez, right? Where will this cap space come from?
Sign-and-trade? Shh, no tears only dreams now.
Kevin Durant wrote on his Twitter feed on July 3rd that James Harden would not become a restricted free agent next summer.
"He not hittin the market," said Durant in a response to Nate Jones.
Durant was asked about his comments by Sean Deveney of Sporting News.
"I may be wrong," said Durant. "I don’t sign contracts, I don’t negotiate contracts."
James Harden will consider signing with the Suns if his contract expires after next season.
"Yeah," he said. "Of course. I love it there. My mom lives there still. So that's definitely my second home as far as my comfort level and going to school there. But obviously, I'm with the Thunder right now and what we have is special."
Oklahoma City will be able to match any offer Harden receives.
"That's out of my hands," Harden said. "That's not my decision. That's the front office. I'll let them decide that."
Austin Rivers underwent successful surgery on Friday to clean up bone spurs in his right ankle.
The tenth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Rivers’ injury flared up during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas last week.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Brian McKeon in Boston. He's expected to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp this fall.

I literally posted that exactly an hour before you did, in the same thread.![]()
A press conference will be held on Monday.
Vaughn spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Spurs and will repace Stan Van Gundy.
Vaughn had the same duties as the team’s top three assistant coaches: Mike Budenholzer, Don Newman and Brett Brown, but he sat behind the bench as NBA rules allow only three assistants on the bench during games.
General manager Rob Hennigan and Vaughn are familiar with each other from their time with the Spurs.
It's pretty damn impressive that Sacramento has ten players in Sacramento this summer already working out regularly. Seems like the young Blazers could benefit from doing something like that.

In what will surely be one of the most important moves of the summer, Fenerbahce Ulker announced the signing of point guard Bo McCalebb to a three-year deal. McCalebb (1.83 meters, 27 years old) arrives from Montepaschi Siena, where he played the last two seasons. He was the Turkish Airlines Euroleague's top scorer last season with 16.9 points per game to become the first playmaker to win the Alphonso Ford Trophy.
