MAGA very upset a Canadian among the Artemis crew. Especially after he spoke French. Why is Canadian going to "our moon"?

Honest question….. why doesn’t the moon rotate? Why do we always see the same side?

Honest question….. why doesn’t the moon rotate? Why do we always see the same side?
Because it doesn’t want to.

It actually does, but it rotates at the same amount that it orbits; if you’ve ever heard that the moon is “tidally locked” in orbit to the earth - this is what it means.

Heres a GIF showing how the moons rotation relative to its orbit around earth keeps the near side of the moon orientation facing Earth.

Fun fact, the far side (also referred to as the dark side) of the moon has numerous craters which suggest that it has been impacted by multiple Asteroids.

The moon is almost like a little protective shield in space for the Earth.

I love the moon… It might sound weird, but without the moon life wouldn’t seem as great to me. I love to look up in the day time and see it up there in the blue sky. It’s crazy… It’s this whole entire mass out in space which we can see from earth. I love a crescent moon at night time in the summer.

Heres a picture of the Moon taken July 15, 2018. I believe the “Star” seen near it is actually a planet - Venus. Photo was taken from the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge.

When somone moons you, do you see their face?

It's simple, really.

Interesting coincidence. How large an object appears depends on size and distance. The sun is vastly larger than the moon but much farther away. As a result both appear about the same size from Earth. Which is why we have solar eclipses. If the moon was tiny like those of Mars it could not cover the sun's disc.

I grew up when a lot of little boys dreamed of one day becoming astronauts. I still love the idea of space exploration, but I've had a hard time getting excited about this flight around the moon.

It just seems to me when people on earth can't afford groceries or a roof over their heads, when their healthcare (if they had it) might get taken away, when education isn't affordable, when we're shuttering forestry and parks offices and withholding retirement payments from postal workers because money's scarce, and when the Pentagon is asking for billions to fight a way halfway across the world, this might not have been the time to fund a lunar flight, and it's hard to get excited seeing four people celebrating seeing craters on the other side of the moon when people in your community are struggling to make ends meet.

It feels frivolous and out of touch.

Is it just me?

I have seen this argument and while I sympathize, it is incorrect.
Space program is tiny part of budget and had paid off both in science and in engaging public in something awesome.
The reason we don't have good things isn't the space program. It is gigantic tax cuts for the rich intended to starve federal government. It is $1.5 trillion Trump wants for military. It is giant tax credits for biggest businesses without accountability. It is billions going to rebound up and incarcerate peaceful hard working immigrants.
Fact is, we have enough wealth in this country to have schools, health care, transit, renewable energy and science.

Your last sentence is totally correct. No one is saying otherwise. However, when the people in power are making this out to be a matter of choice, I just can't get enthusiastic when there are better choices.

Honest question….. why doesn’t the moon rotate? Why do we always see the same side?

Because it's just a painting on the firmament. Duh.

This doesn’t help FAMS…… Now I gotta go to the google machine and look up firmament?

I can help. A firmament is a undergarment that produces this look:

Well, it does make them look like something from another planet.

NASA generated $76 billion for US economy in 2023, report says

For context, NASA's FY2023 budget was approximately $25.4 billion

Spending on NASA (space exploration) pays back the US economy $3 for every dollar spent.

I can't imagine spending that money better..

"Saintly" Charlie Kirk said if he were ever on a plane and learned the pilot was Black he would wonder if said pilot was qualified. White males are presumed qualified, everyone else is an unqualified DEI hire.

Black pilot worked pretty well for Artemis.
