Billy Horschel’s index and middle fingers fidgeted slightly beneath a clenched jaw, his eyes staring intently as Jason Day lined up a 5-foot par putt to extend a sudden death playoff at the AT&T Byron Nelson. He held the poker face for a brief moment after Day’s putt slipped past the left side of the hole, a sheepish grin eventually forming as the weight of his first PGA Tour victory since the 2014 Tour Championship and perhaps a bit of empathy sunk in.

“Listen, I’ve missed a short putt not too long ago to lose a playoff,” said Horschel, who missed a 2-foot par putt to fall out of a five-man playoff at the RSM Classic in November. “I know the feeling. You always want to win with a birdie on the last hole. It’s the way the game of golf goes sometimes.”
