I don't have kids and to frank I don't want to have kids. Now don't get me wrong I love kids but I don't want my own.

Not sure if you do have kids, but really, that was me before I had kids, and other than my nieces and nephews, kind of the same way now. I didn't understand why I was supposed to go nuts over other people's kids, and really never held a baby before my kids were born. Since then, they are the only two people on earth who I would give up my own life for without thinking twice.

i cant stand any of my friends kids at all, they are spoiled whiny annoying rude violent shitbirds, and most of them stupid

my nephew is cool though, and babys are aight

Twice. Once at the fanfest and I think you were with Wookie and BBert. The other at a game outside by the north entrance. I was working so it was kind of brief.
 
Back to the topic. I've always wanted kids and think I would be a great dad, maybe a pushover. But, I want it to be in my mid-30's. Every time I talk to my mom though she brings up how she wants grandkids. WTF? Kinda some self-centered shit if you ask me. I think its like a thing for chicks in their 50's these days. Her sisters and friends on FB all post pictures of their grandkids and she's jealous and wants some to post pictures of. My theory.

Times aren't like they used to be though. Most of my friends I grew up with don't have kids. The ones that do wish they waited longer (not that they don't love their kids).

The opinions are all over the map, which just goes to show it's a personal matter, and right and wrong are what is right and wrong for each person. My family tend to marry late; both parents were 27, late for their generation. My brother got married well in his 30s, as was his wife. They adopted their daughter, now 14. And they are fine with late marriage and parenting.

Papa G, companion animals are not the same as children. Sometimes cats and very young children show similar behavior, but I've never thought of them as the same. What bugs me are pets as status symbols. Sure, I buy a few toys for my cats at the pet store, usually under $5, but the doggie spas and crap like that? Please. It doesn't make the animal happier. Give the animal good food, vaccinations, spay/neuter, a place to safely run, and lots of love, they are happy. You cat is not going to brag around the neighborhood that he/she has a fancier kitty bed than the neighbor's cat!
 
My mom says the same thing zags. All her brothers and sisters have grandkids and she hounds me for one constantly. Sometimes to the point I have to just walk away from her and not talk to her for weeks.

She sees my dumb cousins having kids at 19 and gets all butthurt.

Papa is probably going off his experiences - nothing wrong with that. Scary, but I know quite a few people (mostly friends of my parents or their neighbors) that their animals are viewed the same as kids. It's more common than you think.
 
From my very limited experience, you can prepare yourself all you wish, but you're never really ready to be a parent. Even when they handed me some scissors to cut my boy's umbilical cord and then handed him to me, I still wasn't ready. My thought was, "Holy s**t; this is a ride I can never get off."

Worse yet, you don't really know the kind of parent you'll be. I've had friends convinced they'd be terrific parents hate the experience and vice versa. Parenting isn't hard, but it is relentless.

It sucks, but the only teacher is experience. You do the best you can, f**k up all the time and hope for the best. Good thing kids are resilient.
 
I am aware some folks treat pets like children; IMO it's insulting to the animal.

Maxie, at least you had 9 months to prepare, sort of. My niece is adopted; my brother and sister in law got a call about an available baby and needed to get from Bay Area to San Diego the next day to pick her up. My brother and I were supposed to go to an A's game; I was startled to get a frantic phone message that he was canceling because they were going to get a baby. WTF? They had no baby stuff; fortunately friends were able to loan some basics. The first few weeks the baby slept wherever they put her down, although she didn't seem to suffer for it. They ate meals wherever. And since she was adopted a social worker was coming to view the nursery and make sure everything was organized and the house clean, none of which were the case. After her naming ceremony, my father offered to baby sit so they could get the house cleaned and the baby's room set up. The child came out fine, though! She's 14 now.

Well said. I prefer man-to-man defense over matchup zone. Never good to be outnumbered.

You don't have to view or treat pets the same as kids for having pets to be similar to having kids.

They are obviously similar.

Agreed. But for those that don't know (i.e. people who have never had kids), I give them the benefit of the doubt. People think they know, but unless they've had kids, they don't (but they never fail to presume to know because they have nieces or nephews, or friends with kids).

This may offend some, but kids are just dumb animals. You have to train and teach them. If not, they willl take over, run the show, and do what they want. Just like any animals I've ever had.
