Exclusive Ayton is agreeing to buyout (1 Viewer)

This is surprising because, while I am not a big Ayton fan by any stretch, he's still a better player than any other center on our roster... while I'm all about giving our young guys more run, that's not how Joe has been building this team.

When we made the Simons deal, I said we should have just waived him rather than make that deal (and I still believe that) so I guess it's just good news that we didn't take on tens of millions of dollars of additional salary over the next few years and give up draft capital for the privilege.

As for roster spaces: I find that pretty hilarious given we have kept guys like Minaya on the team for the last few years. Our problem has definitely not been that we've had too many good players, and Cronin doesn't seem to be changing that.

Not a fan of this. As much as people dislike Ayton he isn't useless. He was our best center we had on the roster imo. I'm not saying Clingan cant get better but he obviously needs to improve his cardio.

People were hammering the possibility of Ant walking away at year end as a way of defending the Jrue trade.

Looks like we cut Ayton for nothing.....
I legitimately think Clingan contributed more to wins in his 67 games last year than Ayton did in his 95 over the last two years.

Just a reminder on buyouts and the offset language. We get spared of his new contact amount by half minus the league minimum. League minimum is like 1.2. So if he signs for 5 million with someone, we're spared his buyout amount, plus (5-1.2)/2. So another 1.9 million. Not the FULL new contract amount.

I was hopeful someone would want him, but can also see the argument for not taking back other bad deals, and this way, you give him an opportunity to sign somewhere at the beginning of free agency, like someone else mentioned, instead of waiting until a lot of money is gone.

To add on to this a little, Ayton s set to make 35.5 this season. Let's pretend he gave up 5 million, knowing someone would sign him for 5. Take the 5 from the buyout, and then the offset of his new 5(5-1.2)/2, and his actual salary would be reduced bey 6.9, bringing it down ~28.6.

If someone signed him for the full MLE, of 14.1, that'd be a savings of over 11 million on his salary. Now it's down to ~24.5 million this year.

Ideal situation is he gave up the full MLE amount in the buyout, because he had that full amount lined up. That would knock ~20 million off of that 35.5. Ideal. In otherwords, I'm 99% sure that isn't happening. But would be awesome.

Is he that worthless?

That QUITTER is finally gone. About time. Should've NEVER worn the crimson... I guess we took him on to get Camara... That's the only good thing.

I agree but I didn't want to say it and get all the pushback/flak for it.
Hahaha fair enough... we've both been here long enough to see the same thing happen over and over; even if they try to point out how next time will be different.

No. And neither are most of the guys who make $30m. Is Porzingis? There are tons of guys who make way more than they’re worth. But they don’t “fucking suck”. It’s just not true and it’s frankly stupid to keep saying over and over

I don't think they suck, so I agree with you there.

cap space (next year), a roster spot this year, and an opportunity to give his backup who made the team 6 and a half points better per 100 possessions.

So we are supposed to believe Clingan is a starting center in this league with the capability of not fouling out in the first quarter? Cause you see who our backup center is right? Wow!
We have Timelord, Duop, Yang and Walker as backups. Might still be our deepest position.

If we wanted cap space next year we should have bought out Simons too if he wasn't a part of our future instead of trading for a 35 year old pg on the downswing.

What was the max he could get from the team vs what they could offer him now?
None of that really impacts Jabari as his $30 million ish max or whatever are way over his market rate.

This means the Blazers now won't make an effort to retain Jabari. Might mean there's a trade coming where we fill out our roster spots.

Ayton averaged 28 minutes over his last 20 games. And he fouled out once. Had less than 5 fouls in 15 of 20 games. So yeah, I think he can control his fouling

How HAS Joe been building this team? That’s the question nobody has an answer for, including Joe.

Unless it's a 6 year contract, he is in no way worth a 30 million dollar contract

I know you're not asking me... and I've felt like a broken record about it (other than two drafts where I loved us taking Sharpe and Scoot) essentially since day one. I don't like this roster at all, I don't think the cap situation has been well managed, I don't think that he ever committed to a rebuild, and I don't think that the future of this team is very bright because we're going to be paying the players that emerge as being worth keeping a lot of money all as we try to slip into play-in position.

Ugh.

Clingan fouled out of 2 games last season.

Here's how many fouls he had in the games where he played 30 or more minutes during the season.
He fouled out of none of these game.

Minutes / fouls
31 / 4
30 / Zero
33 / 4
32 / 4
30 / 2
34 / 5
32 / 3
31 / 5
31 / 3
