Exclusive Ayton is agreeing to buyout

Fischer just said the Blazers are gonna take the full MLE into the season to use as a TPE. So presumably we’re not going to use it now.

Pretty surprising it was such a large salary forfeit. This makes it pretty clearly a smart decision.

What if Ayton signs for full MLE of 14 million - then we'd save about $16 million off the cap or so?
Agreed. It is pretty unusual for someone to give up that money.

Wish we would have done the same with Simons.

Ayton approached the Blazers to do this. Doesn't sound like Simons did.

Ayton also had a much larger contract and was more difficult to trade. Perhaps that was communicated to Ayton agent and led to the offer.

Also not clear that Simons would have large MLE offers available for him. So perhaps it wouldn't have made sense for him to give back as much.

Sources say sources are sources

… source: source, bro

What a joke. Imaginary cap space.
Come on Nate...who in this FA period right now is worth throwing the $14M at that fits a need? Kennard MAYBE? We have young guys at every spot we've finally opened up all the playing time for. Why not keep that in our pocket to use during the season. We need to see what JG brings back to the roster and then use the MLE to address any weaknesses from there (if we need to use it at all).

I'd much prefer this to handing out another stupid vet contract - which is about all that Cronin has done as GM in free agency.

We have heard this song and dance before. They won't use the money.

about that

10M+7M-1.2M

There's no free agents worth 14.7M that would actually sign with us. Although I would just throw a 1 year 14.7M deal at someone just so we have go into the season with that salary.

Also using the NTPMLE to bring in a player in trade -- either for that player explicitly and/or to gain a draft asset to go with an expiring contract.

If Ayton goes to the Bucks ... then Grant + Murray = Kuzma + Connaughton ...

Trading Grant to return expiring contracts and/or not more than 2 years is an improvement for the team salary structure.
Grant in the role of 3rd forward -- switchability with Deni and Toumani -- is plenty strong. If the Blazers cannot find what they want, then don't trade him, build value compared to last year, and look to February or next summer.
Regardless, there's no extension for Simons or Ayton AND a real direction. Holiday provides 2-3 years of veteran leadership at both guard positions; if he's a BETTER Brogdon trade asset, then that's good, too.

I think the Blazers have usually been up against the luxury tax. When have we had a trade exception or cap space into the season with room under the tax?

Why would you want that salary? NTMLE can now be used as cap space so its better to have that than a player on a 14mil contract.

Our fan base is extremely schizophrenic. HOW COULD THEY GIVE JRUE HOLIDAY SO MUCH MONEY.

But also...

WHY HAVEN'T THEY THROW THE MLE AT SOMEONE even though there isn't an FA worth a damn...
I don't want us throwing money at someone. I agree that free agency looks rough. I'd rather sign caleb love types than spend unnecessarily.

A player has to want to come to POR

Didn't realize he still has to clear waivers

However thinking about this more todays announcements don't become official until July 6 so he'd be free to agree to anything now.

Ramona is often a Lakers shill.... So her even aware of this might be a big indicator he's ending up there.

I think this all but guarantees he is going to the Lakers. Most of the other suiters have all picked someone up. Lopez went to the Clippers and Houston picked up Capela.

The Lakers are a good place for Ayton. Low risk for them. How they will use their expiring contracts to build around Luka and answering Lebron's passive aggressive nonsense will be interesting.
Grant to LAL along with Ayton would be a good thing.

But in the end, they couldn’t live with his bad ways. The tardiness to team flights and practices, according to a team source. The skipping of rehabilitation appointments. Fans saw him slam chairs when he was taken out of games. And a team source said there were tantrums in the locker room when he was sidelined for poor effort.

When the Blazers traded for Ayton, not everyone in the organization was on board. Some questioned his maturity. When Ayton arrived, he envisioned himself as the cornerstone, the big fish, and he acted like it. He was carefree and loud, often blurting out songs or offhand comments in the locker room. While some reporters laughed, there were times when veterans at their lockers rolled their eyes.

And Horford I believe to the Warriors

Good riddance!

Yeah he is a total joke. Greg Oden and Channing Frye called him out. Total disgrace of an NBA player.

Maybe he will do good with the Lakers - but I'm so glad he's some other teams problem.

I'm the guy who hated the ZBo trade and never have believed in addition by subtraction. This might be the one situation I reevaluate that.
