OT Babysitting While Black

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

This hyper sensitive projection is crazy.

30 so odd years ago I was single parent raising a Daughter. I always had at least two or three girls around the house, ran them around, sleep overs etc etc etc..I hate to say it, but I would never do the same in todays environment

In these types of situations, I'd err on the side of caution.

Don't see anything wrong with it. I mean if I was taking around two black kids or white kids around and acted defensive, it would look really suspect as well.

Don't they have that campaign "if you see something suspicious, say something".

Across the country, in our communities, we share everyday moments with our neighbors, family, coworkers, and friends. We go to work or school, the grocery store, or the gas station. It's easy to overlook these routine moments, but as you’re going about your day if you see something that doesn't seem quite right, say something. By being alert and reporting suspicious activity to your local law enforcement you can protect your family, neighbors, and community.

"If You See Something, Say Something®" engages the public in protecting our homeland through awareness-building, partnerships, and other outreach.

Play an active role on national “If You See Something, Say Something®” Awareness Day, September 25, 2018. Learn more about how to get involved.

“She pulled up alongside us and asked, ‘Are the kids OK?'” Lewis tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I answered, ‘Why wouldn’t they be?’ She just smirked and drove off.”

The woman circled the parking lot and returned to Lewis’s car, saying, “Can I ask the little girl if she knows who you are?” and Lewis answered, “No, you cannot.” The woman then said, “OK, I will take down your license plate,” and left.

“I asked a few white witnesses if it looked suspicious that I was caring for two white children, and they said ‘Kind of,'” says Lewis.

So several different people verified he looked a little suspicious, the woman seemed like she was being polite here. Child trafficking, abductions and murder is a real thing, if the guy is being defensive, the next step is to escalate otherwise it could be another dead kid found in the forrest.

Oh, stop it. Some guy eating Subway with some kids (they have Subways in Walmarts? Weird.)? That sure seems suspicious. And then he got gasoline?!? Oh my god!!! What's next? Is he going to drive them to soccer practice?!?

I see people with kids of different race all the time. Never ever occurred to me to cross-examine them. If I bent down and asked the kid,"Do you know this person?" I'd expect trouble.

This seems to be because he is a black man. If he were a white man, or an even an Asian man, with two black kids I'm betting the farm no one says shit. Mr Lewis was forced to convince the officer he was an okay dude. To me that is degrading and unacceptable.

The only suspicious person in the story was the stalker lady.

Yeah. They said, "Kind of" which is really the only funny part of the story, in my opinion. I pictured them sucking on their soda straws, standing in the parking lot, maybe having a smoke, watching this crazy lady harass this black dude. But really to me them saying that, her saying that, is just more proof of how freaked out white people are of black men.

Yet they will tell him to his face that he kind of looked suspicious.

What!!!! They let you into Montana!!!!!

Hey, Bro, great pics!

Unfortunately I hear stories about men being questioned in general. Our society doesn't trust men, and that distrust goes into overdrive when kids are involved.

Consider that when I fought for custody of my Daughter and won, I was one of a hand full oof men who had ben able to do it in this state..perception has become dangerous in this environment

So, this is wrong.

But I get El Prez's point.

Here is the key and where both parties could have made a better decision.

First, the lady is just assuming the racial differences are questionable without any regard to behavior or posture. It is one thing to start to question if they are sullen looking and unhappy and if he seems to want to have a hand on them so as they wont run, type of thing. But per the article, they were laughing and joking and having fun. Kids in danger don't do that and she should have dismissed it right then and there.

So, she is wrong to even confront. However once confronted, the babysitter could have disolved the situation within seconds. Yes. I cant imagine how deep it sits when someone becomes a victim of this type of racial bias, or any racial bias for that matter. It wont go away though. As sad as it is, it wont go away without turning the other cheek. I'm not saying ignore, but treating those filled with racial hatred, with pure kindness. This is tough I know. Im a victim of feeling hatred towards those who exert bigotry like this. My best friend is a minority and so I have witnessed it up close. I watched a cop target him for no reason and set him up.
With that said, the babysitters reaction fueled the fire. We need to figure out how to put the fire out, not add to it.
Once he showed that standoffishness he became suspect.

He doesn't owe her anything more than a "fuck off" is the issue. Would you explain yourself to some nosey lady in a parking lot? There's about a zero percent chance I would.
