About

The Ballantine's Championship is a European Tour golf tournament which was played for the first time from 13 to 16 March 2008 at Pinx Golf Club on the island of Jeju in South Korea. It was the first European Tour event to be staged in Korea.

The tournament was announced in July 2007 by the European Tour in partnership with the Korean PGA, marking a continuation of the European Tour's expansion into Asia. The Asian Tour, which had not been offered the co-sanctioning rights to which it felt it was entitled, responded by calling the event an "invasive" action that "colonised" Asia in "blatant disregard" of the "principles of the International Federation of PGA Tours", but six months later it agreed terms to co-sanction the event. The prize fund in the first year was €2 million (circa US$2.9 million).

The €2.2 million showpiece tees off onThursday at Pinx Golf Club on Jeju, the picturesque Korean island where Yang was born and raised.

“I haven't won two weeks in a row before,” he said. “Perhaps that is an issue about me not being as focused in the next tournament after I’ve just won.

The defending champion clinched his unprecedented 12th Asian Tour title at the Pinx Golf Club last season when he battled through unusually cold and windy conditions to triumph in a dramatic three-way playoff for the biggest win of his career.

After shrugging off a niggling elbow injury that forced him to withdraw midway through the second round of the Masters a fortnight ago, Thongchai has been given a clean bill of health and is determined to put up a strong defence for his title at the €2.2 million (approximately US$2.9 million) showpiece sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and the Korea PGA.

"I am looking forward to the Ballantine's Championship. It was my biggest career win ever, not just because of the prize money but also the points which helped me reach the world's top 50," said Thongchai of his win last year where he fired a two-under-par 70 on the final day to enter a playoff against Spain's Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and local hero Kang Sung Hoon. He then sank a six-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to claim the title.

Fraser Leads, Els In Contention At Ballantine's

Marcus Fraser will take a one-stroke lead into Sunday's third-round shootout at the Ballantine's Championship with Ernie Els just two shots off the pace after the second round was completed on Saturday.

The $2.9 million (1.9 million pound) European and Asian Tour event was reduced to 56 holes after six hours of play were lost to heavy fog on Jeju island on Thursday.

Leader by the same margin after the first round, Australian Fraser shot a steady two-under-par 70 on Saturday to add to his superb seven birdie opening 65 and move to nine-under for the tournament.

Fraser wins the Ballantine's Championship

Australian Marcus Fraser posted a third and final round of 3-under-par 69 to win the Ballantine's Championship in South Korea.

The Ballantine's Championship on the European Tour was shortened to a 54-hole event after dense fog on Friday.
