Is that all?

Point guard is priority. After that is sorted out, this might be the next step to take.

I'm not too savvy on the Cap holds and stuff.. but dont we only get the MLE when we go over the cap? and since we arent over right now.. we wont get the MLE till next summer will we?

No, since we're under the cap this year, I do not believe we get a MLE.

That's probably a little high for Bass, but not near as bad as what the other free agents are asking for.

Thats what I thought too.. So I guess I was just confused how he would want Bass AFTER the PG situation is fixed.

Bass would be worth a contract similar to whatever the MLE is.

Huh?! I would be absolutely happy to give Bass the full MLE.

There was just an article out yesterday explaining why Boozer most likely will not opt out today. Detroit is the only team with significant cap room and a need for Boozer. But it seems their top target is Gordon. If they get Gordon, that leaves MEM/OKC, but they are still rebuilding. Portland has no interest in Boozer. Boozer will not opt out because he could be looking at an MLE deal.

Now will anyone really give Bass an MLE deal with Boozer potentially looking at an MLE deal? Players are going to be in for a rude awakening starting at 9 PM pacific tonight. GM's will not be beating their doors down. Miller will only get big money if Philly keeps him. I do not see where Hedo will get big money. The Lakers will luck out and get ariza on the cheap as there is little money out there. Sure, many teams will have the MLE to spend, but few will actually spend it.

If we sign FAs this year and go over the cap, then do we qualify for MLE? Or does that not kick in till the next year you are over the cap?

I think next year.

Giving the MLE to players who may or may not deserve them is usually a big mistake. I can't count the number of times the MLE has been used on a failure, and the team wants to trade them for expirings. Not saying Bass will be the same, but just be wary when you're giving a role player the full MLE.

I guess it's a good thing we don't have one.

We won't have the MLE, you're right, but that's not important. What's important is this shows the amount of cap space required to possibly sign Bass.

If thats the case then we could just not pick up Outlaws option today and use that money towards signing Bass if we really wanted him. I'm sure that would not happen, but it would balance out our roster a bit better with a true back up for Aldridge.

One hitch though. We cut Outlaw and Bass signs elsewhere. We screwed.

right.. and while i Like Bass.. Cap Space on a backup PF wouldnt be wise with the glaring hole at PG.

In my opinion Bass should be our #1 target. Backup power forward is the biggest need on our team. Blake is a serviceable PG until Bayless is ready to take over and we're fine at the 3 with Webster, Batum, and Outlaw.

So servicable equals shitty?

We already have one of the better PF's in the league. Getting Bass would be great, but in no way should he be our number 1 target.

I think if you looked at the stats you would find that Blake was certainly no worse than average among NBA point guards. He can get the job done and I think Bayless can be a special player in the league. The only place this team has dogshit in its rotation is backup power forward.

Good thing we just drafted two. Good think that one of Joel or Oden is going to get less than 18mpg at C.

Bass would be a decent pickup if Joel wasn't here. As it is, finding a PG that passes the ball to players taller than him in the big, rectangular painted area near the round orange metal thingy 10' up is the A, #1, Top-of-the-List Priority.

First priority PG. But once we have that taken care of (say Trout and Blake to Chicago for Hinrich) we still have maybe $5 to $6M in cap space. We could make PF the next move.

Here is a ranking of players by cbssportsline that takes into account various offensive and defensive stats. I am not sure what they are however.

Blake comes in at #28

If you click on the team stat it breaks it down by possition. PG was 25TH in the league. Clearly Portland's worse statistical possition.

I don't agree with this at all, but I'll point out that two picks were spent on players who can give some hustle minutes at backup PF, and both are bangers. Wasting the only cap space for the next 10 years on Brandon Bass? That would be a huge mistake even if he gives a great 18 mpg behind LMA, Oden, and Przy. I'm guessing the plan is to pay the 2nd round PFs 2nd round money and hope one of them can rebound and, more importantly, defend.

I agree.. I just want to make sure what our priorities are lol.

You are somewhat correct. It was explained to me that if a team is under the cap by more the the MLE, the MLE is not available to them.

Ahhhh thanks for the clarification. so we are out of it anyway.

Is there is another loophole?

Let's say for shits and giggles Portland has 8 million in cap space. Portland signs Hedo for 8 million leaving them with no cap space, but not over. Then Could Portland trade it's TPE for a player to thus go over the cap. Then they regain their exceptions?

Nope. The MLE has to be renounced by the start of the free agent signing period (midnight tonight EST) or else it counts against the cap. Think of it the same as guaranteeing Outlaw's or Blake's contracts. You have to decide tonight. If the MLE is not renounced, then it's like a caphold the size of the MLE. If it is renounced, it's gone for the year. You cannot "un-renounce" it later in the off-season.
