It’s been some time since we’ve looked at the available data from the network of motion-tracking cameras that have been installed in all 29 NBA arenas known as SportVU. The NBA describes the technology as, “Using six cameras installed in the catwalks of every NBA arena, SportVU software tracks the movements of every player on the court and the basketball 25 times per second. The data collected provides a plethora of innovative statistics based around speed, distance, player separation and ball possession.”

Nicolas Batum is third in the NBA in total distance traveled at 105.5 miles so far this season and is fourth in distance traveled per game with an average at 2.6 miles. With an average speed of 4.4 miles per hour, Batum is tied with Thomas Robinson for the fastest player on the team, though he’s obviously clocking that average speed in far more minutes than T-Rob.

In addition to Speed And Distance the article also goes over Touches/Possession, Passing, Defensive Impact, Rebounding Opportunities, Drives, Catch and Shoot, and Pull Up.

A lot of great stats to take in.

Not sure why I am posting this article however when those employed by the Blazers should be doing it. We are the official Forum of the team right? Let's foster the relationship guys!

That is an interesting stat, it shows how active a player is on the court, on average. I'd have expected Mo Williams to rank #1 there since he sprints down the court quite a bit (sometimes barely in control). T-Rob is very active, but I'm surpised about Batum since he seems to be more stationary on offense. I guess he runs around a lot on defense.

Not bad for someone who used to just "camp out" at the 3 point line waiting for a pass

Nicolas Batum joins Pippen (1995-96 and 1996-97) and Durant (2013-14) as only NBA players with 250 reb, 200 ast, 75 3-PT, 25 blk in their team's first 40 games.

God bless him, but that was a pretty Barrett-ish post by Casey. Highlight the highs!

But yeah, what SportsVu has done for nba.com stats is revolutionary. I love it.

But I thought people on here said he sucked!?!? #HCPConfused

Yeah thats interesting. Last time we played OKC Durant was gassed in the 4th. I wonder how much it helps forcing him to follow Batum all over the court? Will be interested to see how well we play the red hot Durant tomorrow.

It was said in humor, I understand Casey's position and I'm jestingly nit-picking.

But as someone who did analysis for a living for a while, some of the things that twigged my radar were mixing and matching and omitting. No worries. I'm already a Blazer hater who cherry-picks, supposedly. ;)

Come on Brian the Blazers cannot post anything negative on their own site about the team. While the team has been great there have been some flaws and I think it would have been nice to get the whole run down instead of some cherry picked stats.

Still some info is better than none.

I wish there was some way to break down Average Speed into Walk, Jog, Sprint. They gather those stats, it just seems like they're not providing us with them.

I see Batum and Mo as covering the most distance per minute, but Mo dribbles half that distance, which may slow him down compared to Batum.
