Batum Playing in France in 2015

After 2016 Olympics he will be the face of French basketball because IIRC Parker is gonna retire after the Olympics. He is never gonna stop, he's patriotic. The best thing the Blazers can do is give him the first 2 weeks of the season off to rest. That's only 6-7 games but could make a lot of difference when you also factor is the ASB.
I like it!

Dude, we should be taking notes out of the Spurs book. Resting our best players periodically throughout the season, if Batum/LA/Wes/Lopez/Dame all miss 5-10 games due to rest is it really gonna kill us in the long run? Playoffs is about who is best rested and who has the best depth.
Stop making sense! I hate liking shit!

 sorry both sets of supporters just ruin it for me. Between American Outlaws and "YSA" and Mexico's "P*to" chants I'm emberrassed for both.

Then hand his contract over to the French National Team...
You do know that every team is specifically prohibited by the CBA from even suggesting any player from any country not play during the summer, right?

hmm at first glance, I am not thrilled, but I have to respect his decision. He is allowed to play, just like any other player can and do play for Our national team.

All of this over reacting is unwarranted at best, and ridiculous in the extreme.

American Soccer fans blow. It's a bunch of bros lol

I'm no better though, I only watch them during WC and Gold Cup season.

I'll agree on the bros part. There is a certain sleeveless section of the Timbers Army that nobody likes, and they are big time USA guys too.

Nothing wrong with watching during WC and Gold Cup... pretty soon you will be hooked on Club level as well

I can't wait till Bundesliga is on FS1

Do you notice that LA, Wes, Damian, and Rolo all rest during the summer?

An interesting observation given that 3 of the 4 you mentioned have had significant injuries this year... I understand the point you and others are making but once you get to this point in the season, the part where it really starts to matter, everyone who has seen extended minutes isn't going to be 100%. The grind gets to you whether you rested 5 months ago or not. If a week long all-star break can make this much of a difference for Batum, I'd just rest him a couple weeks during the unnecessarily long training camp/pre-season.

It's not just the rest though. But the time that could be spent working on skills. Notice how Mathews, LA, and Lillard always seem to add something to their game each offseason? Well that takes time, repetition, and practice away from team ball.

I think Nic has added to his game over time, his passing, his pull up jumper all have really come the past couple years.

As he should... The food, the wine and the women. Ah... he gets more than the average Joe. A bonafide NBA player in a Euro atmosphere means all the perks comes his way,. He and Parker can have a night on the town. .

We're talking about 10 games in the offseason.

The money argument is just odd, so if Batum only made $6mill a year some of you would be fine that he plays 10 extra games a year for the French team?

Why do some of you get so jacked over what Batum makes? It's reasonable. Look at what Dallas gave Chandler this year.

Some of you bitch about Batum's stats. Up until Wes got hurt Batum was the 4th best player on the team. 4th best. How many 4th best players on a team are as versatile as Batum? Stats, rebounds, scoring, defense.

Just want kind of numbers do you want your 4th option to put up?

you are not Blazer Maniac...kj. my post was not directed at you, 11 posts in 2 years and I'd guess every one of his was a Batum stirring thread. Nic owns a franchise in France and is invested in his national team. Pacing himself and staying healthy are concerns he'll have to address. I personally don't have a problem with world competition in the offseason and yes, I know a lot of folks do. I think bringing this topic up when Nico is showing leadership and stepping up is a buzz kill
Sorry..That was completely meant to be a joke. Got caught in the middle.

Completely understand that point of view but money is what players are judged by and the hit the team takes cap wise is what people see. Could this team have two players just as consistent for the same money? Would they end up being a deeper team if they could spread that money around a bit?
The other idea is that it absolutely makes no difference to me what a player makes because it isn't coming out of my pocket other than when i decide to buy a ticket to go watch.
Nic is versatile and at this point there is no replacing him. As far as i am concerned he is the key to making it deep into the playoffs this year. However we have seen this Tired/nagging injury problem before and it looks as though we will see it again.

It's going to be fun when Lillard signs a big contract and he goes into a shooting slump or doesn't get enough assists. On a game by game basis is going to drive people nuts.

Also you can't play two players at once in place of Batum. You can get a player better than Batum but saying you can replace with two players means the player replacing Batum in the starting lineup is half as good. There aren't many 4th options in the NBA as good as Batum.

You can't play them both but you can play one and see if he is playing well and if not try the other? At this point Nic checks out of games quite a bit.
Really i wholeheartedly want Nic Batum to stay and play well for the Blazers but my patience wears thin sometimes. If he shows next year and goes another 50 games with sub par games and nagging injuries he will not get the contract he will be looking for and the Blazers will have to make a decision on what to do. Do they trade him and make sure they get something in return? Or do they offer him less than he feels he is worth and let him walk?

Sometimes i feel being a NBA GM isn't quite as easy as many think?

Hope Portland is not stupid enough to renew his contract after next season.

Yes I certainly do, they rest and work on parts of their game and IMO come bach refreshed and ready for what is an incredible NBA grind, to not rest given that grind IMO is aski

One can easily distinguish IMO between respecting a player and his rights to play for his country and how that constant playing year after year after year could be a detriment for the NBA teams he plays on. I am a Blazer fan number one, I want my team to succeed, if I feel a player

there is no way we have proven (with Wes) we have a team that can compete for championships like the Spurs have for a decade, heck they were in the finals the past two years. Age and injury may finally be catching up with them this year, but until we get to a championship with this group or most of it do not try to imply we are on a level similar to those Spurs teams that got to the FINALS, we can hope or wish we are but we have proven nothing yet.
Stotts has not coached here for a decade...just sayin'

Amigo we can "just sayin" a boatload of stuff, and I really do hope we get there! We all can and do express our opinions/hopes here. I hope we go deep this year, without Wes it will definitely be more difficult, and how Nic performs the rest of the year ad especially in the playoffs might determine whether or not he's here next year. just my opinion

If the USA invades France there won't be a Team France and Batum isn't good enough to play on Team USA.

Problem solved.

Wow you are so right. My whole point of posting the article is that I am tired of Batum's inconsistent play, coming to training camp already tired and his body not rested, and most importantly he brings his game when he wants to bring it. Don't get me wrong when he brings it therest is no one better at the SF position. But how often is that. If he played consistently at least 80% of the time like the other four start do, it would be a no brainer. But he has not played consistently at least 50% of the time and that is for past years as well.

Some replied he owns a Franchise in France. Guess where he got the money? His big fat contract that he has not earned. Next contract should be heavy performance bsse If he is still hear.

You're worth what someone will pay you. To me that's earning it. Living up to it is a different story.

This is BGD bad right here. *facepalm*

Should Aldridge Shut Down the Season?

The Blazers have been hit by several injuries in the last three weeks, ranging from nagging to season-ending. At what point do they start advising players to shut it down?

Great article today about the injuries, one thing that stands out to me is when Dave stated:

"Nicolas Batum has appeared in 61 of Portland's 68 games this season but is suffering through the worst offensive slump of his career. His poor performance has been blamed on a combination of fatigue and injury."

And yet he wants to play in France this summer. He is not committed to Portland except for a paycheck.

Batum would merely have sat out a long time ago if that was true (he gets his check regardless). In fact, many fans were calling for him to rest and he powered through the injury instead. To me that shows he is in fact very committed to this team (even perhaps stupidly - is that a word?).

He's costing himself tens of millions of dollars. If he had been rested and healthy his production would be much higher and he'd be in line for a larger contract next summer. If playing basketball is more important to Batum than money I have a hard time faulting the man.
