In what appears to be the inevitable, Brandon Roy has likely played his last game as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The new amnesty clause, inserted in the new collective bargaining agreement, will allow a team to release one player during the duration of the deal and that player’s salary will not count against the team’s luxury or salary cap. Roy is owed $15 million next season and that’s a hefty penny to pay a reserve with bad knees.

Never fear, Nicolas Batum is here and he explains why he is more than capable of filling the void that could be left by Roy.

“I can definitely play the shooting guard position on a permanent basis,” Batum told CSNNW.com. “I’ve learned a lot from Brandon (Roy) and if he did play his last game as a Blazer, he has taught me so much on how to play the position that I’m ready to take on that role if Coach Nate sees it fit.”

Batum was the starting small forward for most of last season until the Blazers acquired Gerald Wallace in a trade. Soon after, Batum was demoted to the sixth man. If there is a shot of Batum cracking the starting five again, the attainable path might be through Wesley Matthews. At 6-8, with his length, he would be a nightmare for opposing two-guards to maneuver around.

Batum says that his French coach has worked tirelessly with him on coming off screens, pick-and-roll situations, and improving his ball handling skills so that he’ll be capable of playing both guard spots once he returns to the league.

“Everything that I’ve been working on will translate over to the NBA,” Batum said. “It’s basketball. I wanted to make sure that when I came back to Portland, I would return a better all-around player than when I left. I think I did that.”

Playing amongst his family and friends has been a blessing in disguise for Batum during the 149-day lockout. However, he sounds more than ready to return to the states and show of his new repertoire to the Blazer’s coaching staff.

“I was like finally, when I heard the lockout was over,” Batum said. “I can’t wait to get back to my teammates, coaches, and the city of Portland so we can pick up where we left off at.”

Playing for his national team allowed Batum to be put in situations where he’d have to make critical decisions in clutch moments and he said he would often think about what Roy would do in those situations.

“Watching Roy over the years, I saw how calm he was in pivotal moments and for the most part, he always came through,” Batum said. “That’s another part of my game I was able to develop thanks to Roy and he was and always will be someone I’ll look up to.”

For the time being, Batum doesn’t quite know when he’ll be leaving France as he’s waiting for his visa to be cleared. What he does know is that the Blazers are prepared and equipped to go the distance with the talent that’s already on board, especially if they get a particular big man back.

“Greg Oden is the missing piece,” Batum said. “If we get him back, our team is complete and we’ll be able to make a deep run in the playoffs. I hear he’s making progress and I’m excited for what’s in store for us this season.”

Someone trying his hardest not to be a bench player with Wes and Gerald being the starters last year

I don't see McMillan making such a move early on. Batum will have to prove he's not the same passive player he's always been.

I agree. Besides, Matthews seems to have a decent lock on that position.

LMA is going to have to score 25+/game for this team to have a sniff of the playoffs without Roy off of the bench.

I'm liking your new angle you're taking here, PapaG.

With Miller gone, you need a nightly topic to rant about. Your "go-to" rant so to speak.

Nothing to rant about? Bring up Roy.
Blazers lose? No Roy
Roy scores 20pts for the Magic? Make Roy thread
Wesley shoots 2-13? Bring up Roy.
Can't close in the 4th? Bring up Roy.

I'm excited to see how it plays out over the season. I think there's something brewing here.

I'd rather put 100% blame on Pritchard.

So much easier to do.

man this place is hostile and its only a "tentative agreement" on labor issue

The last time the Blazers played 5 starters at their natural positions for a season they had a red-headed center and a coach with plaid pants.

So
Felton/Crawford
Batum/Matthews
Camby/Oden
Wallace/Garbage
LA/Chris Johnson

no... my roster is

felton/smith/johnson
wes/? roy or batum?
wallace/batum
la/landry/babitt
camby/oden/johnson

Be still my beating heart:
Felton/Smith/Armon Johnson/Mills*
Wesley/Williams/Diebler*
Wallace/Batum/Babbit
LMA/Chris Johnson
Camby/Greg Oden's ghost*

Actually didn't they play with 2 Pg's? Hollins, Twardzik, and Johnny Davis getting most of the minutes?

I bring this up because I prefer having three good ball handlers on the floor at once. Two at the very least. Playing SF's at guard does not fit that description. I prefer going small over going big.
But he may have too.

Stop right there.

Jeez, can't these sports writers get anything right.

Roy has a guaranteed contract. Paul Allen will pay $15 mil for Roy this season regardless.

Saying "$15mil is a pretty penny....." is entirely beside the point.

jeez that all but says bye bye brandon

Yeah, Batum talking about what he'll do if Brandon is an amnesty cut indicates the players and team are preparing to move on without Roy.

Not when you account for luxury tax

The lux tax bill won't be $1 for $1 on Roy's salary. It is $1 for every $1 the TEAM salary is over the tax limit.

Right

That doesn't change what I said

MAX contract + the extra luxury tax(Roy's contract pushes them way over) on a guy you're not even sure can handle 25mins a night?

That's a bad gamble to take, and there's no need to spend the extra money to find the answer out. You're not going to find a doctor that will say Roy will be back to normal. There's just no way Roy's play will ever justify his MAX contract and the luxury tax as well, considering his contract pushes the Blazers way over.

It's an easy decision for me, as tough as the situation is. Love Roy and what he's done for the organization, but it's run its course.

Why do posters keep brining this up as if it means ANYTHING.

Ever heard of sunk costs?

Roy gets his MAX money NO MATTER WHAT!

Paul Allen pays the check if he is in Portland or not.

The luxury tax matters and is important. Saying Roy "isn't worth" or "won't earn" his MAX deal is just nothing more than bitchin'.

You can't complain away the debt. You can't whine away the committment. You can't argue "fairness" or "worth" in an attempt to wash away the contract. And, AGAIN, Amesty does not eliminate the Blazers writing big checks to Roy.

No one ever said Roy won't continue to get paid

But having his salary on the books for the average production he's going to give you is TERRIBLE value. Only a fool would allow that to happen. It cripples your payroll and what you can try and do to improve your team. It's stupid money. And paying a higher luxury tax because of his contract? Even more stupid. It makes no sense to keep him around at this point.

Blazers fans are the pet owner that won't put their dog to sleep even though it's blind, deaf and has diabetes. Learn to know when to call it quits.

The only reason it matters is that as long as he is getting max money and is on the team, he is going to get all the latitude in the world to try to live up to his contract, even to the detriment of the team. His contract, fixed though it may be, influences his role, his playing time, etc. I strongly believe that if the Roy from last year were only making $4M/year, there would be no question about whether or not he should be starting.

Is having his salary on the books for ZERO production a better value?
