Batum will sign first lucrative offer sheet

It's not his job to put this Blazer's plans first. He's got look out for Batum since this could be his biggest payday of his career.

Makes sense...... but somebody needs to sit Nic down and tell him can still get his money AND be on a better team if he waits.

because he doesn't care about the blazers, he doesn't work for the blazers. he works for batum and wants to get batum the most money he can.

This agent was PIIIIIIIIIIISED when the Blazers didn't extend Batum. He didn't hide his feelings one bit and after the deadline, basicly said (paraphrased, reading between the lines), "fuck the Blazers, I won't do them any favors and if I get the chance I will screw them hard."

At the time I thought he would calm down a bit by the summer. Apparently not.

At the time I posted that I thought the true motivation behind this is the agent really, really, really wanted his commission yesterday. Dude probably needed money.

I think it is cute that you think the agent is looking after the best interests of Batum.

This is the agents priority:

1) Agent
2) looking good for the client
3) actually doing good for the client

If he was doing the best thing for his client he would wait around a little bit instead of signing the first offer sheet that comes to him. Once DWill/Gordan/Hibbert are figured out Batum would be the next big money player around and teams that missed on those guys would throw there cap at him.

July 1st, free agency begins. July 10th, moratorium on signings ends. THEN we have 3 days to match whatever Batum's offer was in that 10 day span. So we have almost 2 weeks to put together our signings.

Good point. Repped!

True enough ... this team has also had nearly 400 days to hire a new GM ...

Cynical point and irrelevant. Worthy of a negative rep if the board allowed it.

The guys the Blazers have been targeting for GM interviews are under contract and the Blazers have had to wait until the end of the season for their former teams to be willing to grant the Blazers the right to interview them.

this is probably more realistic. good call!

Why would this agent go out of his way to fuck up our off season plans......makes no sense.

Nic's agent is playing it smart and doing his job. He's supposed to get Nic the best deal he can. Teams are only going to be willing to offer a front-loaded contract when there's the chance that it will screw with the Blazers' cap space. They aren't going to give Nic the chance to sit around while the Blazers make other moves on the FA market. They're going to offer a front-loaded deal and tell Nic he's got a certain period of time to sign it or they're moving on to another player. The Blazers aren't going to give him a front-loaded deal out of the goodness of their hearts either. They're only going to do it when they're pressed into it by another offer.

If there is a weak market for SF this off-season, he might get more room to wait and decide.

"I'm not going to shop around. I'm going to take the first offer I get." Does not sound like a good bargaining strategy to me. I don't see how this helps Nico's wallet or his career.

True, but this makes getting a high profile free agent or a restricted free agent MUCH trickier...as High profile free agents are likely going to take some time before they decided and you a team with a restricted free agent is going to take the alloted 3 days....

meaning that some team interested in Batum is probably going to put the screws to POR...front load a contract give it to Batum on the 1st day (smart for them as well, in case POR does match)....

That means you have to have all of your moves locked up by the end of those 3 days...

Batum and his agent working with POR would be much better for POR but it appears they are not going to do that....You have to ask, does he really want to stay here?

We could very well lose our only decent young player.

Is Dragic/Collison (fucking meh) worth losing Batum over? No!

Fair enough (not really), the first lucrative offer sheet Batum gets will be from the Blazers . . . it will just be be post dated to August.

I agree, it would be much better for us if he would work with us. But, obviously, it's not in his best interest to do so. I would say it's also not in his best interest to just take the first offer. Sounds like an idiot. I would guess within the 10 days, or however long it is, we will know whether someone will be taking our deal or not. For a lot of those guys, they decide early on. I know Amare agreed in principle before the moratorium was over. Bosh I believe did as well. Boozer and Wade decided before the official deadline. I think it was mainly Lebron dragging things out. I think it is pretty reasonable to assume we could have agrrements in principle with people like Dragic or whoever, not saying I want him, but I think he will know where he is going and sign close to beginning.

Yeah it does not sound like he will work with them but that does not mean he will work against them. I am guessing that most agents would not want other teams to think he is working with Portland, because that may reduce his offers. Batum probably wants to stay, but he wants to make sure he gets as much as possible too. It's not like he has already made a lot of cash. This could be his biggest contract. So the agent has to make it pretty clear, Batum will go anywhere for the right price. I would do the same even if I wanted to stay.

To be fair, he said, "The first good offer we get, we're going with that. We're not waiting for anything."

That might not work out for the Blazers, but I don't really blame the agent. If he tells the NBA he's going to wait for the Blazers to do some business, then that would probably make other teams less likely to make Batum their top priority.

Hopefully Portland can get others lined up to sign and then match Batum after they close business with the new acquisitions.

In terms of how much is too much for Batum: I don't know. Nic plays a pretty easy position to fill, but while he might not seem to have taken a big step up, he HAS improved, and he's still young. It'd be a shame to lose him, but if some team is going to start him at $10m/year, that's too much IMO. The team would not be able to rebuild while paying a player for potential, rather than potential.

Cynical and irrelevant huh? There are well run teams and there are poorly run, fly-by-night teams in the league ... I'm sure it's all going to work out jut fine ...

If it's just getting a body to play there, then ALL the positions are easy to fill.

Nic is a 14/5/1 guy. He plays good defense and has a solid PER. It's not that tough to find other guys that have similar skill sets.

Nic had the 8th highest PER at SF. Would be 8th at SG. Would be 23rd at PG. 29th at PF, and 19th at C. If it's just looking to find a guy with an average PER like his, I'd say the positions outside the wing positions would be much easier to fill.

If you feel like his potential is maxed out, sure.

But, his potential hasn't maxed and he was put into a system with a coach that relegated him to catching and shooting.

Snapper Jones laughed at the idea of Batum getting more than $6m/per.

He could very well get nearly twice that.

You mean the coach played him to his strengths?

Unheard of.
