Well summer creeps onward and we're locked into wrangling over Millsap for at least a couple of more days, unless Utah decides to match sooner. Obviously PG is our greatest need. Bayless played pretty well especially in the 1st half yesterday before getting sucked into rat ball in the second half.

So then is Bayless the answer at PG?

Hopefully, we give Bayless a chance to hold down the #2 PG spot all year. Nate expects a lot from his PG's and is very critical of turnovers. Since Blake has a very good assist to TO ratio I don't expect him to lose his spot. Plus the team seems to pump his value to the team all the time.

In ONE summer league game, he showed that he for sure is ready to learn to be a PG and wants to be one. He wont start the season as the starter, but half way threw I bet he will. We have got to keep this guy. He is a stud.

No.

Can "He will spot start this season when Blake is hurt" be an option?

It's either A or D. No way Nate starts Bayless over play it safe Blake. If we move another PG into Blake's role it will be because he is an upgrade, so Bayless obviously wouldn't start then.

I answered B out of hope, not out of any kind of logic.

But I do think it would be in Portland's best interest to make Blake one of the better back up point guards instead of one of the worst starting point guards in the NBA.

Also, I am pretty sure Portland is not going to sign anyone else at that spot, so option D is pretty much out.

I think Blake starting is the same as what you are saying. Obviously Blake won't start if he's hit by a truck, the question assumes a healthy Blake and Bayless.

ok thanks, then Blake starting this season... but next season.. ITS ON!

I think that Blake starts. There's the possibility of a trade, or I could see a minor injury to Blake and then Bayless seizes the opportunity and never relinquishes the job.

He's capable. But I don't think he starts until his 3rd or 4th season.

If Bayless starts at PG we're in trouble; that guy just doesn't have the God-given talent to be an NBA starter at PG. I suppose I can imagine him pulling spot duty off the bench as a distributor, but it ain't easy...

Lookit, I would love to be wrong here. I think Bayless has the smarts and the ambition, and that's a long way toward what it takes. I just don't think he has that intangible something that informs a guy about who's where, and what situations are available to exploit. I wish it were otherwise...

 If that's what it took, then 80% of starting PG's aren't fit to start.

Only on this board can so many demand Bayless as our PG for the here & now after one pick-up game against non NBA scrubs.

Bayless is not a PG based on anything we have seen of his game so far. He is an undersized 2G, who can play PG on defense. I am 100% sure that he will NEVER be a top-20 point guard in the NBA, measured in terms of assists/minute.

If the blazers would have completely some more open shots, Bayless would have had double digit assists in the first summer league game.

I am not demanding anything.

I think that what Bayless brings to the first unit is better then what Blake brings.

Neither is a good choice, so I would pick the devil I like instead of the devil I don't.

I voted A. I don't think Portland will risk a mid-season upgrade at the PG spot and I don't see them getting anyone better before the season starts... that means Blake or Bayless.

Blake provides superior perimeter shooting and a more steadying influence. I can't see Bayless overtaking him this year.

Agreed.

In terms of assists/minute? Is that the only measure of what makes a good point guard? That isn't to say I'm not inclined to agree with your statement; I also don't think he'll ever be a top assists/minute guy, but that's hardly the only metric that matters.

What are you talking about? It's a well known fact that we let go the greatest pg who has ever lived. Maris where are you when I need you?

Clearly the ONLY measure of a PG's prowess is assists/min. Therefore we gave away a player that is better even then CP3 or certainly on par. Sergio oh Sergio where fore art thou Sergio?

Bayless is still a long way from being a steady consistent PG. Just becoming the backup would be a huge step for him.

I'd say it's much more likely we see a Rudy/Roy starting backcourt then Bayless/Roy.

I don't get this Rudy as a PG thing. I mean he has the vision, but that's about it. Maybe if he worked on dribbling all summer constantly every single day I could see it but it would require an absolute ass load of learning how to dribble the basketball that I suspect takes years to gain or else we would see it more. I know Nate wants to try it but I think that is more about appeasing Rudy then reality. Fact is even if Rudy had Roy's handle he would still lead the league for worst defender at PG.

If Bayless knew how to pass a ball correctly to an open shooter, he would have had double digit assists in the first summer league game.

Unfortunately, he does not.

We have 1 competent PG, Blake, and Rudy is the closest we have to a quality backup PG. Then Roy.

That's it. :sigh:

I have to assume KP is pulling his hair out (and cursing Nate) trying to replace Sergio.

The alternative is a 3 guard rotation with Roy, Blake and Rudy.

You crack me the fuck up ...

When I heard Bayless on Canzano this afternoon, I thought to myself, this cat is gonna be an NBA stud. Hard to explain why other than I sensed an incredible amount of moxie in his responses. I hope he stays with us.

Can you give us a recap?

Can you give us a recap?

It boiled down to him saying he has an incredible amount of drive and that there is NO doubt in his mind that he's gonna be a major contributor in the NBA over his career. He also gave Steve Blake high praise and said that he was very comfortable being the #2 PG on this team.

I dunno, you just had to hear him. I had a very, very good feeling about this kid while he was confidently answering Canzano's questions.
