"I've been on teams where there's a guy like that, and it messes up the whole chemistry," Bayless said.

So, he internalized his feelings. His anger over not playing mounted. Doubts lingered. And his hurt cut so deep that he unknowingly formed a callous demeanor that carried a steely stare and furrowed brow.

"I was (irate), and I mean (irate)," Bayless said. "Not at coach, more at myself. Just thinking maybe there was something I didn't do. Maybe I wasn't working out as much as I could have been. That's why I kept taking it harder and harder."

Ten days into the season, he nearly snapped.

"I remember after the Houston game, I was so mad driving in my car," Bayless said. "When I got home, I went directly to the practice facility and worked out until 1:30 in the morning."
'I listened'

This is why Bayless will be a successful player in the NBA for a long time. He works like a maniac. I've seen so much talent wasted in the NBA because they didn't have the work ethic to go along with that talent/physical gift. Bayless has the talent and the work ethic.

Well, one thing is for sure, you can never accuse Bayless of being a slacker. The guy is COMPETITIVE.

With that said, I don't think it was anger that was pent up...

Jerryd Bayless says he doesn't have a girlfriend.

"I treat basketball like the love of my life," the Trail Blazers rookie said.

Match his competitiveness and drive with his raw talent, and he could really be special... and soon. We need it to be soon if we're going to stay in the playoff picture.

In the context of the article and his comments this quote seems an understatement. This guy is a couple more DNP's from a padded cell. The team better get that employee who helped Martell so much to hook up with Bayless before we lose him altogether, or he hurts somebody in practice.

That's so true. You never know, he could end up crippling Sergio Rodriguez. God only knows where we'd be without him.

Martell was depressed. Bayless isn't depressed, he's frustrated... or he was.

Putting him in a padded cell is the only way to keep him from taking Sergio's spot in the lineup!

Or Rudy, who he perceives as an obstacle to his success. :dunno: Or even Roy eventually.

He clearly thinks he is better than anybody else, and is uncontrollably angry about the world not bowing at his feet.

I always though he was just stuck up, but now he just seems dangerously resentfull.

If he sucks tomorrow will he kill someone after the game? :dunno:

You have got to be f*cking kidding me man. You're joking right?

Huh?

You know, I heard that Sergio takes candy from little kids in the park and he flashes old ladies... What is the world coming to.

How I wish we could give negative rep

He might go after Oden next!

It's a great problem for an athlete to have that his motor is too revved up ... doesn't exactly do wonders for interpersonal relationships, but when a guy's biggest issue is that he needs to take his foot off of the gas versus having to dig deep and find a way to motivate himself ... I approve.

Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-oo

Yes, I am the victim of a Basketball Jones
Ever since I was a little baby, I always be dribblin'
In fac', I was de baddest dribbler in the whole neighborhood
Then one day, my mama bought me a basketball
And I loved that basketball
I took that basketball with me everywhere I went
That basketball was like a basketball to me

You have got to be f*cking kidding me man. You're joking right?

Maybe I didn't use enough smilies for you? :ghoti:

Yes, I am, but it seems the over-protective Bayless coddlers  took me seriously. :tsktsk:

C'mon, don't you guys think the drama is getting a bit much?:sigh:

He's a  rookie in a crowded lineup who had some terrible games at first and couldn't hit a bucket until last week, and everyone's acting like he was exiled for 20 years in Siberia.:ohno:

Rookie had a predictable rough start, has had one good game, and it's like the Blazers were conspiring to force him into a medical retirement or something. :drumroll:

Oops! Did I say something wrong again? :dunno:

Thanks for reminding me barfo.

Classic oldie.

my first thought is that it would be strange to be angry after that houston game with the way we won it on roys long 3pointer as time expired. but the kid wants to play, and hopefully he deserves to, god knows we could use it right now.

With his work ethic, the sky is the limit for him. I could see him easily being a top 5 rookie in the class.
The only other guard I would take over him right now is Rose and who knows 2-3 years down the road how each progresses.
Its great to have guys like he and LaMarcus who are always working on their game and striving to get better.

Rose Westbrook Mayo Augustine and Gordon have all flashed considerable promise... I think it's probably Westbrook who is enjoying the best year thus far though. I'm happy Portland has Bayless, but I'd also be happy with any of these guys except for DJ who I think would be a poor fit with Roy.

Extremely strange for a teammatewho puts the team ahead of personal glory.

You are so full of Sh*t! Way to backpedal there.

Of course, all those guys have seen a lot more PT than Bayless. And, they were all off the board by #9. So, not available to the Blazers. Of the five you mention, based on what I've seen so far, I'd still take Rose, Mayo and Westbrook over Bayless, but based on playing style and team needs, I'd take Bayless over Augustin and Gordon.

The thing that impresses me the most about Bayless is his ability to get into the paint, draw fouls and get to the FT line. That is an extremely valuable skill in close games - especially in the play-offs. And, it removes the dependency on perimter shooting. Ironically, I thought Greg Oden would be the Blazer rookie to remove that dependency (and I think he still will). The problem with jump shooting teams is shooters go cold, and if you don't have other ways to score, you're going to lose games when your outside shots aren't falling. With Bayless and Roy both being able to draw fouls and get to the line, it will help the team win games when the outside shots aren't going in.

I know the dataset is limited, but here's the FTA/36 for the top six guards from the 2008 draft:

Rose - 3.2
Mayo - 3.2
Westbrook - 5.7
Gordon - 3.7
Augustin - 4.4
Bayless - 7.6

And while that's not quite Dwyane Wade territory, it would put Bayless in the top 6 in the league in FTA - if he gets starter's minutes and continues to get to the line at the same rate. Bayless' current 7.6 FTA/36 matches Kobe's career FTA/36 and actually exceeds his current 7.3 FTA/36.

Given the limited minutes, it's impossible to project if Bayless will continue to get to the line at the same rate, but thus far it's pretty impressive for a rookie who doesn't get the "superstar" calls.
