COTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Forward Michael Beasley, who vowed when he joined the Phoenix Suns a year ago that his marijuana problems were in the past, has been arrested by Scottsdale police after they found what they believe to be marijuana in his car.

Beasley was arrested early Tuesday following a traffic stop, according to Officer David Pubins.

An officer found three cigarettes suspected to contain marijuana in Beasley's Mercedes after smelling marijuana during the stop, Pubins said.

Beasley was released after being cited for investigation of one felony count each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Pubins, court proceedings in the case will begin once results of lab tests are available.

Beasley, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft by Miami out of Kansas State in 2008, signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Suns a year ago. But he went on to have a disappointing, inconsistent season, averaging career lows of 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds in 75 games as Phoenix compiled the worst record in the Western Conference and second-worst in franchise history. He shot 40.5 percent from the field, also a career worst.

Marijuana issues followed Beasley to Arizona.

In June 2011, Beasley was ticketed for possessing marijuana and speeding in a Minneapolis suburb. He also has acknowledged that while playing for Miami, he twice violated the NBA's drug policy and entered a treatment facility in 2009.

At a news conference following his signing with the Suns, Beasley pointedly said he was through with marijuana.

''I realize 10 minutes of feeling good is not really worth putting my life and my career and my legacy in jeopardy,'' he said then, ''so I'm confident to say that that part of my career, that part of my life, is over and won't be coming back.''

10 minutes? He's doing it wrong.

So much odd shit about this article. That stood out to me, and his quote there also makes it sounds like he really does have an addiction. How about this though:

An officer found three cigarettes suspected to contain marijuana in Beasley's Mercedes after smelling marijuana during the stop, Pubins said.

Beasley was released after being cited for investigation of one felony count each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Felony marijuana possession?

But he was also released? So is this really a news story?

his tolerance was probably really high..but even with that it should last 30 min at least.

PHX signed this bust to 3 years/$18 million last year? I completely forgot about it. LOL

This is a case of both sides being ridiculously dumb. Beasley for having weed in public, in his damn car. Phoenix for having crushing weed laws and for being stupidly hot.

Oregon was the first state to decriminalize marijuana, in 1973. (I'm sure everyone knows that though.) As far as outright legal? Not going to happen. Even treating it on the same level as alcohol, if that's what was meant, is a long-shot still. I'd like to see that happen, with a very stiff tax attached. For one thing, it's so insanely inexpensive to grow, the difference between the negligable production costs and "what the market will bear" is a huge revenue opportunity. The fly in the ointment though, is why would anyone pay much for it when they could grow their own without fear of prosecution? Unless corporations, pharmaceutical companies, and the government find a way to control the supply and the reap the profits, it's going to be hard to 'uncriminalize' weed.

Not all that long, now that WA and CO have both done it. Within 10-15 years it'll be legalized nationally. Another 2-4 years and Oregon will join it's more progressive neighbor to the north, now that they've blazed the trail (oh, the irony).

Yeah.. It's going to be legalized in Oregon in less than 5 years for sure.
