...when I was growing up, there was this restaurant called Lum's who specialized in hot dogs boiled/steamed in beer as well as conventional "virgin" dogs. And I swore that whenever I reached drinking age (18 back then) I was going to get me one of those dogs and have my first beer there. You could even have your choice of 3-4 different beer induced dogs. (Bud, Heineken, etc.) When you walked in, the whole place reeked of beer.
...at that time the hot dogs were like nothing I had ever seen before. They were 1/4 pound kosher dogs (yup, 1/4 pound) ...this place also offered a large line up of beers, domestic and imported and on the very day I turned 18, I kept my promise to myself...sat at the bar, and had my first "legal" beer and a 1/4 pounder steamed in beer...one of those dogs would fill you up.
You could drink at 18? Holy crap you are an old dog aren't you. Lol!
...yup, the war in Nam had something to with law makers dropping the age require...I guess they figured if you were old enough to be drafted you were old enough to drink.
It's a warm fuzzy to know a true connosieur of beer steamed franks, and brew, resides here. You know first hand, a good time, with brew and your foods.
Yes, Tom, back in the 60s-70s, early 80s, an 18 year old could buy beer in most states, other than the West Coast. On vacations to the Plains states, one could buy 3.2 Beer, (but not on Sundays in some states). Or go into a Pool Hall out in the wheat field small towns, and get Beer at 16.
In Georgia, Florida, most southern states, one could even buy Hard Liquor at 18, and get any Beer's beyond 3.2 alcohol. At 18, we were legal to go into bars, night clubs, liquor stores, you name it, order any mixed drink, or buy full stout imported beer as well.
At one time, in some southern states, an open container, did not include a Daiquri, any other mixed drink, if the cup/glass had a lid on top, with a piece of masking tape on the straw. If one drank a beer while driving, and were pulled over by the law, a screw on beer lid, if placed back on the bottle, WAS a closed container, even if the beer was half full, less or more, didn't matter.
You can only imagine, drunk fests, on downtown Atlanta, Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale, New Orleans, and most other city streets, in the wee hours of morn, when the only persons on the streets were laying near a bus bench, puking their guts out in the sidewalk gutters. A motley crew, way back when, in the day.....when it was legal to get drunk at yeppers-18.
