OK, I brought this up before, but it is time for a revisit.

If we did trade for Simmons, what position should he play? If the answer is anything other than PG will he be OK with it?

Not to sound like a broken record, but if CJ becomes the PG in Philly it's a safe bet his assist totals will jump. If Simmons plays any other position in Portland his assist totals will fall. I honestly think Simmons' rep as a playmaker has been somewhat inflated by his role. If he switches position/situation he will have to find another way to carry his weight on offense. I know others disagree, but I still see this pretty much as a straight offense-for-defense swap.

Now I realize defensive metrics are flawed, but Simmons definitely isn’t a top 2 defensive player, and when it comes to overall value he’s not in Dame and Curry’s zip code. I’d say he’s a top 10 defensive player, and a top 20 overall player at best. That’s not a superstar.

Can any of that be because of the system hes been misused in?

For many people, purgatory is being in the playoffs and out in the first round. This prevents you from getting a generational talent like AD, or Zion. However, that's only part of the battle because you then have to not screw it up with bad personnel and coaching. Sadly we suffer from the latter two and our Generational talent is 6'3" and only the 2nd best at his position (I still have Curry ahead of Dame, I didn't but then last year happened).

We've got out of the first round three times recently and to the conference finals 2 years ago.

I would like us to go further, so I'm not saying I'm satisfied and the team should do nothing to improve.

However some fans act like the last 10 years have been the worst period to ever be a Blazer fan. They should go rewatch those pre Brandon Roy Blazer years or the Felton year.

After 1977, the Clyde finals and Sheed WCF teams the last 10 years are with any of the best periods of the franchise and also having the franchise best player ever. I and many other wouldn't label that purgatory.

Simmons will break first. He has not been shy about spending his money. He has earned approximately $54M so far in his career, so he has probably taken home half of that at most, so $27M. Dood bought a $17M home in July...missing an $8M pay day probably hurts quite a bit. I'd bet he doesn't have the stones to go the entire season. If Morey and ownership are willing to wait it out, they will win get him back on the court. Now the effort Simmons puts in, who knows.

All he has to do is have "back spasms" and he'll collect the full paycheck.

yeah, that’s the next step. He’s gonna start dogging it on the court, kinda like Harden did. Morey can say whatever he wants. I’d be surprised if Simmons wasn’t traded sometime during the season.

Different sports, but it reminds me of this NFL player, Jared Gaither. Used the back excuse to avoid having to play after getting paid. It’s the perfect excuse because it’s hard to tell whether it’s true or not.

I have no clue what Morey and Philly's end game is here. And frankly, as much as the national media want to praise them for their "tough stance" on over-the-top player empowerment, they just don't seem to realize what is obvious about a league reliant on guaranteed contracts... players in longterm, guaranteed contracts (and especially when they are well compensated) ALWAYS have the leverage, regardless of situation and circumstance.

Morey saying he will wait four years unless he can get an upgrade is frankly stupid (as with "nagging injuries" Ben seems like the type to happily get paid all four years for doing zilch). No one is giving up a superstar or near superstar for Ben Simmons, and there is no chance that he is coming back to play committed basketball for Philadelphia. While they received praise for withholding his money in escrow, encouraging Ben to come back to the team only has lowered his trade value and further disrupts team chemistry. Raise your hand if you're a team that feels comfortable giving up significant draft assets (to flip for a star in the moment or later) to build around a Ben Simmons-led core now? Anybody? They were better off having him be the mysterious enigma posting promising instagram highlights of his training session in LA.

I understand that Morey is posturing here, but to what end? Ben ain't coming back to play hard for the Sixers, and these comments in conjunction to Simmons's recent behavior is certainly not encouraging other teams to enhance their offers for the guy. While I understand the effects of pride in a machismo sport, but Morey and Philly have played this wrong from almost the beginning.

and Embiid’s status is questionable for the game because of right knee soreness

this is why you can’t have 35% of the salary cap pretty much floating in the air

I appreciate your opinion but the guy is either superstar or borderline and easily top 3 best defenders in the league regardless of what stats say

I was on the CJ for Ben trade bandwagon but more and more I'm thinking prima-donna who may or may not play with heart and who, I believe, would disrupt any team chemistry.

Sure he can be good at least with respect to defense and distributing but he acts like an entitled twit who hasn't earned his entitlement.

Difference maker is long way from another superstar, difference maker leaves it more open and gives Morey a way to come out of this without looking like he caved
I think CJ is a "difference maker" the dude drops 30 without breaking a sweat and when playing lead guard, can do that and get 7 assists. Morey isn't playing a game with Simmons, I think he already knows the outcome of that one. The dude is playing a PR game and negotiating with other GMs through the media.

I’m a CJ fan I just don’t think CJ and Dame can win it all together where adding Ben for CJ would give us better shot. My guess CJ goes to Philly as starting PG he will have career year and be great blend with that team. Cj is class act and I have mad respect for him as person and player. Will always root for him unless he becomes laker or Net lol

Wasn’t saying CJ isn’t a difference maker I definitely think he is just saying Morey may settle for less in a player in return if he can get more in assets (draft picks/swaps)

Egg... face.

One thing to remember - he can't trade Simmons without taking back a ton of salary. The one scenario worse than this would be for Morey to just cave in and trade him for an albatross deal. (EG Love or Westbrick) As long as Morey and ownship are on the same page he can largely ignore what outsiders think.

To put it in cruder terms - it's dumb to eat shit to avoid egg on your face.
