My personal opinion is education is a really big topic that should be discussed and we focus on the financial aspect because of college, but I know so many engineers who have similar stories to mine of just being so bored out of our minds in school, being forced to take classes simply because the school system says we have to even if they have nothing whatsoever to do with our degree’s. I value education, I literally take 8-10 courses a year since 2013ish through, Udemy, Coursera, EdX, udacity. So I see it as important but I think only half of the answer is make it free.
edit: Oh and yes I have worked with several engineers who are like 150k in debt and not very skilled coming out of college - Which is ok we all start somewhere but if their going to put someone that in debt they should at least have the basic skills they need...
Well, my opinion is that we used to have socialized education in the days when high-school education was what was required for most jobs (we still have that today, to the high-school level) - and no-one was yelling about communism. Unfortunately, the world has moved on and many jobs of the modern world require advanced education that is not covered at the high-school level, so the right thing to do (for the economy) - is to invest in this kind of education - if it is by fully covering college level education or a big increase in government funding of educational facilities via research grants as was done before - is really nothing more than going back to the days of the past - where the government invested in it's workforce by subsidizing education.
