Usually the original is the best, but what are some of the best covers you've heard?

This has gotta be one of my favorites:

[video=youtube;o22eIJDtKho]

Johnny Cash covering NiN's "Hurt." SOOOO much better than the original.

I also like Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar."

Not a fan of country, but this is a classic:

Anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimme's

Van Halen had several (Dancin in the streets, Pretty Woman, You really got me)

Alien Ant Farm with Smooth Criminal

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded By The Light

JImi Hendrix - All along the Watchtower

Aretha Franklin - Respect

Joe Cocker - A little help from my friends

The Dan Band - Total Eclipse of the Heart

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Metallica - Turn the page

Joey Ramone - What a Wonderful World

Nazareth - Love Hurts

Linda Ronstadt - You're no good

The Kingsman - Louie Louie

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

That's all I can think of off the top of my head

Agree with Soda on Johnny Cash's "Hurt". Great song, its now his song and not NIN.

Also agree with Mediocre Man in regards to Me First and the Gimme Gimme's. Those guys rock! They are a combination of guys from some of my old school favorite bands... NOFX, Lagwagon, and No Use For a Name.

My favorite cover is Social Distortion with "Ring of Fire". They rock it at every concert.

I also like the Supersuckers version of "Hey Ya" by Outkast.

I don't know if I'd call these "best," but I really do like the first two a lot. The third is quite possibly the silliest I've ever heard, but they're all odd...

Jodeci covering Stevie Wonder - Lately

I can sing this note for note too. I love this song.

But really there's no debate about the best cover of all time: [video=youtube;RD7s4i_X-p0]

Definitely "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix. It was so good, Dylan adjusted the way he performed the original to try and match it.

I also like "No Quarter" by Tool.

I like the Dan Band's redux of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

I love that Outkast track BeerBoy!

Baby Got Back - Gilbert and Sullivan Style

I LOVE All Along the Watchtower. I think Cash "Hurt" and "Heart of Gold" are good.

I really like lots of the Chili Pepper covers. But pretty much none of them are top notch on caliber with something like All Along the watchtower. But...

RHCP "If You Want Me To Stay"... RHCP "I Get Around" ... and RHCP "If you got funk you got style".

Hmm...

Funny. I saw your thread title (still haven't read the rest of the thread) and the first song I thought of as a candidate was Johnny Cash doing "Hurt". Reznor is great, but he has the wrong tempo and tone in the original. Cash (and Rubin) hit the damn bullseye. It's perfect.

The other one that has been a favorite of mine since the first time I heard it - All Along the Watchtower by Jimmi Hendrix, covering the original Dylan tune. Pretty hard to top that one. I mean, there is a fantasic museum building built to honor the dude. This song is one reason why.
