But it's like you vent in defense. You weren't venting until you saw the video and somehow tried to equate your situation to the young boy's.

It's like saying All lives matter to the BLM movement. No one is crucifying Susan G Komen for breast cancer funding by saying Well what about Alzheimers? That matters too...
It's my story bro...I've vented about it since the 1970s...we are here to discuss police problems, racial issues or whatever and I've stated my outrage about that case. Why is this taken out of context? How many times do I need to agree with your point? You are attempting to make my perspective invalid because of my race. Think about that.

You said Chinese fire drill. While honestly not knowing what that means or where it originated, it sounds racist to me. I don't think he was being oversensitive. It may not be offensive to Mags but Mags isn't Chinese.
I know what it means. My wife is Chinese and knows it refers to chaos. If you wait for a bus in China, there's no organized line, it's a mass of people looking at the door and moving towards it ignoring the crowd, traffic operates the same way and that's where the term comes from

Sigh... Your perspective is the "All lives matter" version. I'm just telling you how it sounds. Nobody is making your perspective invalid...

What? I find your answer offensive.

Who set you on a pedestal to make decisions if I know the meaning of the term, or where it originated. Many words and phrases have related and multiple meanings.

dviss...I think it's healthier for society and our children if we just make conversations one on one instead of team sports. I don't like to identify my perspective with
a group's version of the subject. When I read, all lives matter, I don't think of it as a platform but just a statement to which I think..yeah, they do all matter.

Yes but when the answer to the statement "Black live matter" is met with "All lives matter" it's like pouring water on a house that's not burning while the other one next to it is on fire.

Imagine that you’re sitting down to dinner with your family, and while everyone else gets a serving of the meal, you don’t get any. So you say “I should get my fair share.” And as a direct response to this, your dad corrects you, saying, “everyone should get their fair share.” Now, that’s a wonderful sentiment — indeed, everyone should, and that was kinda your point in the first place: that you should be a part of everyone, and you should get your fair share also. However, dad’s smart-ass comment just dismissed you and didn’t solve the problem that you still haven’t gotten any!

The problem is that the statement “I should get my fair share” had an implicit “too” at the end: “I should get my fair share, too, just like everyone else.” But your dad’s response treated your statement as though you meant “only I should get my fair share”, which clearly was not your intention. As a result, his statement that “everyone should get their fair share,” while true, only served to ignore the problem you were trying to point out.

Does this need green font? I'm confused. How is my answer offensive? Because I said it sounds racist? No one is calling you racist but that statement does to me. Why are you offended? I'm confused...

I thought he asked a valid question about the term Chinese fire drill and then you confronted his intention and suggested he erase the term..I didn't understand why you did that either. Actually Chinese issues are rarely talked about in relationship to racism. I've always wondered why they are not part of the conversation.

You're creating reasons to be offended. Go back and read riverman's post again, and try to understand what he was actually trying to convey. It wasn't at all "white people get harassed too." It was much more, "California cops are SO aggressive, they'll even harass white people on occasion."

And yes, you are minimizing his experience by suggesting that him sharing it (and showing empathy, as you demand from all white people) is somehow dismissing BLM.

While honestly not knowing what that means or where it originated

You made a faulty assumption about what I know, you belittled me.

By ignoring my response about what I know in your last response above, and then twisting it to a racist subject, you made my response unimportant, which further belittled me.

Your two belittling responses are a form of emotional abuse (Your starting to sound like Trump). You need to work on that if you want people to take you seriously. You can not abuse people in your fight to correct racism, (which I support).

Are you going for the third strike, or, have you learned what you are doing to offend others in some of your posts?

Yes but when the answer to the statement "Black live matter" is met with "All lives matter" it's like pouring water on a house that's not burning while the other one next to it is on fire.

This is a bad analogy. This is assuming that the house next door is not on fire at all, and that is not the case. Law enforcement is a concern all over the country. When someone says, "all lives matter," they are essentially saying that their house is on fire too. Why should one house burning be more important or significant than another house burning?

Yeah dviss I gotta be honest with you. You come accross as dismissing most white males opinions and thoughts on the matter or anything to do with race. The truth is, most white people are ignorant to thse day to day things (not just males, I know plenty of women that feel the same way). The fact is most white people, especially millenials, are all about diversity and people nice to people regardless of race. Just because we don't think about racial things everyday doesn't make it that we don't care. I feel like youve done a great job bringing certain perspectives to my mind that I previously don't really think about, like the videos you posted talking about the cashier incident. Truth is, most white people are ignorant to some of these things going on because they don't experience them day to day and have no idea what it's like walking in a minorities shoes.

I'm sure it gets annoying reading the constant ignorant remarks and downright racist remarks everyday. But I really enjoy hearing about your perspective, you're good at getting people to think about different perspectives. so thanks for that

Sigh... Have some empathy going forward. That's all we want. We simply don't get it... I get told that your opinions don't matter. No one ever said or insinuated that. Why would I be debating with White males about race (ONLY Black person in here) if I didn't value your opinions. Obviously mine isn't valued...

OK guys in the future DON'T FUCKING TALK ABOUT RACE IF YOU DON'T WANT THE SOLE BLACK PERSON'S PERSPECTIVE.

I'm done debating race with White males...

Jesus...

but when you do get it from riverman, you denigrate it
I get told that your opinions don't matter. No one ever said or insinuated that.
You insinuate that all the time--you just refuse to see or acknowledge our perspective on what you say to us.
Why would I be debating with White males about race (ONLY Black person in here) if I didn't value your opinions.
So you can tell us how wrong we are about everything race-related, and set yourself up as the higher authority to whom we should all bow.
Obviously mine isn't valued...
Your opinions are unique, important, and are absolutely valued, when you show the same respect you demand. It's not that complicated.

Huh? Your opinion is valued. I just told you that I appreciate your thoughts and discussions. Sometimes it just comes across that you devalue white male opinions. Ignorance isn't a valid excuse for racism, but you can't change the world in a second. As I said, most millenual white people are all about diversity and treating everyone equal. Many of us do have empathy, we just don't show it day to day because we like to think the world is a better place than some of the atrocities that happen.

nah..most folks here have posted that your perspective is important and we all have life experiences that add value to these threads. I don't believe you are the only black person here..Jabari Young just posted here yesterday I believe but if race is important it's equally unimportant if we get it right. I've spent 20 years in a country where I was vastly in the minority and learned a lot from that experience. It's even more eye opening when the locals don't know you speak the language and talk about you assuming you don't understand them. Sometimes it's hilarious.

What I find annoying is to be constantly identified as a "white male," to have my thoughts and opinions to be processed under the label "white man's opinion." When you type something on this forum, I don't sit back and think "Dviss is a black male so I must consider this opinion through the lens of a black male." I read your opinion, I process your opinion on its own merits, and then I reply to said opinion. I don't care if you're black, or white, or Asian, or Mexican, or whatever. Your opinion is what it is. The beauty of the internet is that we don't have to tell people anything about ourselves. We present our opinions in text format and you can either agree or disagree. I actually don't think about race at all when I'm reading someone's post. Mags is Asian. Wheels is Mexican. El Pres is some weird mixture of a frat boy and a wannabe gangster (but also Asian.) I don't sit back and consider that every time I read their posts. I either think it was a good post, or a bad post. I either agree, or I disagree. There shouldn't be qualifiers to have an opinion.

As you say, we only know what others are willing to disclose. For some reason, I assumed for years that you were black. Just shows to go ya...

It's hard for white people to even engage in these conversations. I know most the time I just try to avoid them. Not because I don't want to learn more, but because I feel like no matter what ill say, I get labeled a white male and am treated like I'm a horrible person that's a moron.

I might be ignorant about a lot of things, andI agree I probably should listen to others experiences more and try to have empathy for them, but I'm definitely not a moron

Lucky for you that you're a white person and have the privilege to ignore those discussions.

True, but the process of educating people is wrong when you make them feel like shit for something they don't even know they are doing or is happening. Educating people is one thing. Shaming them and making them feel bad when they want the world to be a more inclusive place is another

Ever seen Marine boot camp? Gotta break 'em down before you build 'em back up. We evil white people need to be shamed in order to be divested of all our white-privilege-based preconceptions, and then start from scratch learning what it's like to be a non-white living in a white man's world. The longer you fight it, the longer you'll persist in your oppressive privileged perspective. Just accept that everything that you think you know is wrong, and then start from there--you'll be better for it.

And that's the thing. I'm white, but I'm mostly Irish and 1/8 native American. I've been raised and have had many discussions with people that explain stories of my relatives being treated like shit. but when someone sees me now and we have this discussion, they shame the shit out of me for not knowing what this feels like. I agree, myday to day life is unaffected by racial things, but it doesn't mean it hasn't affected my family

I go through long stretches where I avoid OT. I'm actually contemplating retirement from RC2 and just letting the youth movement take over..sort of the old guy around here like Kaman on the Blazers roster. Politics, race, religion...touchy subjects

What I find ridiculous is to discount someone's opinion based solely on the color of their skin. That goes for white or black or whatever. We have no clue what someone has been through. To marginalize someone's life and tell them that their white privilege discounts what they have gone though is beyond ignorant.

Nah, stick around. I've been posting with this community since I was 14, so for the past 15 years. Sometimes it wears you out. But I enjoy reading your takes, even if we disagree sometimes. Just take a break for a couple weeks or something. In a month, bball will start again and we will all be best buddies dropping hoops knowledge
