I'd probably choose Kaleb of that bunch and the reason why: Tim Grgurich

WTF? No Shaw or Malone?

Who the fuck is running this show?

BRING BACK NATE!! :MARIS61:

But really..... why are we only looking at career assistant coaches? If this is our final pile, go with Kaleb - at least the players endorse him. Maybe we can get some strong assistants around him??

If Kaleb gets the offer for the job, we'll have offered the current job to three people (at least that we know of):

Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan, and Kaleb Canales.

One of these things is not like the other.... And I'm not referring to the fact Kaleb is related to HCP.

Cannoli looks like a long-shot to succeed, but the chances of this team having a lot of success in the short run (even with a really good coach) are pretty damned slim anyway, so there's not a lot of harm in hiring the, cheap, popular, incumbent, interim guy ... for now.

If anything, I'll feel kind of bad for Kaleb if he gets the job, because I think he's being setup to fail. If he were given 4 or 5 more years to be groomed as a lead assistant he might actually be ready to take the reins and be a really good head coach, but right now seems too soon.

I LOVE the effort, but cannoli's are perfect in every way and should never be used as a derogatory term

The reasoning has crossed my mind as well. But I am not sure PA would feel good about that. I love Grgs and what he offers and how loyal he is to his friends.

But I think he was in the wrong when he sued the Blazers for the months he refused to work. I get that in his mind he works for the head coach and when the head coach was fired he has the right to leave too. But the head coach was fired, Grgs on the other hand technically quit. I know if was the off season, but none-the-less not showing up to work for the last few month of his contract and suing over not getting paid for it, is technically in the wrong. I certainly don't hold anything against him, but do you think Paul Allen will let byegones be byegones? Paul Allen?

I wouldn't mind Kaleb with Grgs and an extremely seasoned former NBA head coach as an assistant. One that liked motion offense

Here's the problem with having Canales as the HC; I want a coach that's going to help Lillard grow and teach him how to be the best version of himself. I'm not convinced that Canales is the best man for that job. I was really hoping to have a new system and a new coaching staff. I don't want Nate McMillan light. I thought he looked pretty shitty last year.

Why are we doomed to be coached by a bunch of second-rate schmucks?

Just imagine how good Lillard would have been in Summer League if he hadn't been coached by Canales.

LMA put up monster numbers two years ago when he started to play like a center. When he plays primarily on the low-block he had his way with anyone who guarded him.

The first thing Kaleb did when he took over? Took LMA out of the post and primarily played him at the high-post.

Hopefully Grgs will talk him out of this.

It didn't matter who coached Lillard in summer league..... it's summer league.

He's about to start playing against defenses that scout and take away your first or second favorite moves. He'll face players that are twice as athletic and talented as the guys he faced in SL. I'm not saying Lillard isn't up to the task, but I don't want a coach that's going to just give him the ball and say "go out there and do your thing."

I want to see Lillard started off right, with a coach that understands X's and O's and can draw up a real play, because we sure as hell haven't seen much of that over the past seven or eight years.

Maybe we can hire his old Weber St head coach... I think MM has said he'd be better than Canales, which means a college coach would be better than MM, who only taught HS basketball.

I'll have to double check your math, but that sounds right

I just don't understand how someone can be qualified to be HC when they only have a couple years of coaching experience. Prior to that he was a practically a ballboy and an AV boy like HCP.

I understand the concern, but Canales seems to really like the pick-and-roll and Lillard definitely seems comfortable playing it, so from that perspective I don't think he's going to stunt him ... but I do worry that he's not going to stretch him and help him grow beyond himself.

I guess we just have to trust that Olshey will be capable of judging the job that he does objectively and will know if/when it's time to pull the plug and go in a different direction.

What assistants, outside Grgs, would Kaleb need?

I'd look at maybe Dave Rice of UNLV:

Rice has become known as one of the top offensive minds in all of college basketball

I wonder what happened to Malone? And D'Antoni, who I was not crazy about (although these 4 sure don't float my boat)?

I think Kaleb has been the guy all along. This coaching search strikes me as mostly a dog and pony show to give the appearance of due diligence.

All I can remember is Olshey's introductory press conference and him gushing about Kaleb.

I guess it could be somebody else, but I'll be surprised.

"Just like Thibs was overlooked forever before he got a shot, I feel the same way about Clifford,'' Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy compared Clifford to Tom Thibodeau, who also served on his staff before finally getting a head coaching job in Chicago

Van Gundy on Clifford: "I give Portland and Neil a lot of credit. He’s the first one to recognize the greatness of Clifford.''

Jeff Van Gundy had Blazers' coaching finalist Steve Clifford on his staff for seven years in Houston and NY: "He's a no-brainer.''

JVG on Clifford: "I’ve always said, some GM is going to make a lot of $$ off him ... he is going to get the max level output from a team.''

A coach hyping up one of his past assistants? Say it ain't so.

Van Gundy said one of Clifford's strengths is dealing with players. "He combines passion with intensity with humaneness.''
