We are playing either Spurs or Pelicans

Regardless of what happens tomorrow?

No just right now as the Jazz beat the GSW to tie our record. Since they have the series tiebreaker they get 3rd. We can win it back tomorrow.

Worst thing that can happen, Spurs wins and Blazers lose tomorrow. Blazers on a 5 game losing streak and lose home court advantage with the Spurs. Blazers drops the first two games in San Antonio so that’s a total of 7 game losing streak.

Not if OKC wins. If we lose and Spurs and OKC win, we are 4 seed and have HCA.

What if we lose and pelicans and thunder win? Feel like it’s gonna be one of those two.

Then we have 4th and play NOP

Who gets HC

Without looking at anything and going off of memory.
Portland has a better record in the conference than the Pelicans.
Therefore Portland owns the tiebreaker.

Again that's without looking at anything, and going off of pure memory.

Who gets HC
In all these scenarios, top seed gets HCA. In past, a division winner could get a higher seed and not have HCA. That is no longer the case. If Portland has 4 seed, they have HCA.

As I recall the playoff seeding has nothing to do with the draft. We still flip a coin for the draft tie breakers. So theoretically by tanking the last week, we keep HC and still play the team we wanted to in the first round and possibly move up 5 spots in the draft? Fucking genius! Go Jazz!

Well that explains Stotts’ coaching over the past two weeks ;)

Is this 100% correct?
I can’t imagine okc loses to Memphis tomorrow..
That is 100% correct. And OKC has a lot to play for. In some scenarios, OKC can fall to 8th seed. Unless OKC wants to play Houston in the first round...

To be clear, the ONLY way we get the 5 seed (thus no HCA) is if the Spurs win, the Thunder lose, and we lose.

Being that Portland lost the season series 2-1 to the Spurs.
How does Portland get HCA over the Spurs if Portland and San Antonio finish with the same record?

Basically why does the Memphis & OKC game mean anything for Portland?

Glad you asked. Here's how:

If we lose, we're 48-34 and if the Spurs win, they're 48-34. If we were tied with only SA, they would have the tiebreaker. But here's where it gets fun. If OKC wins also, they are also 48-34. Now it is a THREE WAY tiebreaker. In other words, which team has the best record against the other two teams in this 3 way? We are 1-2 vs SA but 4-0 against OKC. Spurs are 2-1 against us and 2-1 against OKC. OKC is 0-4 vs us and 1-2 vs Spurs. So here is how the three way tie is broken:

Portland 5-2
SA 4-2
OKC 1-6

That is why an OKC win gives us HCA even if the Spurs win. Understand?

But if we lose and SA wins we would have the same record and same conference record so wouldn’t they jump into 4th?
Because if OKC also wins, they ALSO have the same record as Blazers and Spurs. So it comes down to a three way tiebreaker. We win the three way tiebreaker, SA comes in second, OKC comes in third.
